Rude!
Today, I’m a cashier and I put a lady’s change on the counter instead of in her hand. She then hissed at me for being rude. When I explained to her that I have never heard that it’s rude to do that, her response was, "Are you kidding me!? You should have been BORN knowing that!" FML

Given the Pandemic, it’s entirely understandable to put the money on the counter rather than directly into the person’s hand. It reduces potential germ contact somewhat. During the pandemic I take the bills for my change and tell the cashier to put the coins in the cup they usually have at the register. On the other hand, in normal times, at least in the USA - It’s somewhat insulting to avoid putting the money directly into the cashier or the customer’s hand. It sort of implies they are “untouchable”.

It's not objectively rude. YOU find it rude. Some people don't like touching/being touched, even before a pandemic.

I mean, that is part of retail training I had in the past. So the proper response to that is, "Nice to meet you Karen."

Some people are just desperate for human contact.

So you're expected to share her germs? At some point you get sick and ******* tired of it.

I would've told her at least I'm not ancient

I understand due to the pandemic, but as a former cashier it is customary to hand the guests their change.
