Romance in Appalachia
Today, my mother beamingly asked for my opinion on her wedding dress. She is engaged to her cousin. Conveniently, they already have the same last name. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, I was reading through a local wedding mag's advice page. A mother-in-law to be was writing about how to handle wanting her son to break off his engagement. I thought, "Wow. That must suck. I'm glad I like my mother-in-law to be." And then I saw her name. FML
Today, I announced my engagement. My mother's response was to freak out and demand that I postpone my wedding indefinitely. Why? My younger sister caught the bouquet at a wedding last year, so "she has to get married first!" My sister has been single for 3 years and showers once a week. FML
Today, my dad married his fiancée, who insists I call her "Mom." I'm three years older than her, and went to the same high school. She's taking me shopping next week to buy me "something nice." FML
Today, I called my mom to make sure she could attend on the wedding day my fiancé and I had discussed. She started off with criticizing the venue we considered, then went on to criticize my fiancé, and then stated she would under no circumstances help out, but demanded to pick my wedding dress. FML
Today, my mother excitedly jumped up and down, announcing that one of her sweet younger coworkers got engaged. I wished she'd had the same reaction to my engagement when I announced it to her a few days earlier. FML
Today, I'm going to be helping the love of my life pick out an engagement ring for my cousin. FML
Today, I met my mom's fiancé. He's a nice guy, he's also my wife's dad. I'll soon call my wife my sister. FML
Today, my fiancé told me he wants to buy an engagement ring for his mother, so that she doesn't feel left out. FML
Today, I called my mother to tell her that I got engaged. In the 15 minute conversation that followed, 13 were spent listening to how this is going to affect her. FML
Today, my brother had his fiancée over to meet the whole family. We were having a great time with her, and my mother gushed to her that she was like the daughter she never had. I'm her daughter. FML

I guess this proves one thing. It is indeed possible to type with webbed fingers.

I used to work with a lady who was on marriage #6. Anyways, marriage #4 she married her daughters ex husband. So her former sun in law.

So, this is just a really awkward family gathering.

You should be more supportive of your mother. Humans have a long history of marrying cousins, and birth defects are not likely to arise from these unions unless several generations of cousins have reproduced. Besides that, if your mother is past the point of more kids there's really no issue at all.

In the past when we were more genetically diverse? sure. but nowadays family's are too genetically similar.

On the plus side, there will be no hassles about bride’s side/groom’s side seating — it’ll be just one big mosh pit of similar DNA.

sometimes it's just better to keep it in the family.
