Today, after working my ass off for months for an open supervisor job at my work, I found out that they hired someone for the position. The guy has never worked for the company before, has a background completely unrelated to what we do, and has to be trained as he knows nothing about what we do. FML

This happened to me before at somewhere I worked for 8 years. I promptly put in my two weeks notice after securing a different job. One that actually paid me more, with better benefits, and promoted me to a management position after 2 years. If they don't appreciate you and your abilities, someone else will. If they really had no good reason to hire this other person, I'd start looking somewhere else before you waste 8 years like I did.

You're too good at your job. Why make you a slack-ass supervisor when you actually do work?

That’s why you build an asset instead of working your ass off for another persons asset.

Your life sucks, while to be honest, he could be hired due to skills other than technical expertise required in your field, however they could possibly try to groom you for it, which unless you are a terrible person, it means they're too lazy to plan for your career

Did you apply for the job? Tell a manager you were interested?

Just because you already work there and "work your ass off" doesn't make you supervisor material. I get that it sucks you thought you'd be in line for it and that the guy they got will need training but that doesn't mean he wasn't better suited to the roll than you. Also, had you made your manager aware of your desire for promotion or were you just working extra hard in the hopes of them giving you it? You usually have to apply for jobs even if it's in a company you already work for.
