Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, I shared the story of my younger brother's unexpected death with a friend. After telling him the story, I looked at him with teary eyes and he looked back into my eyes and said "I understand how you feel. That is almost as bad as when I lost my cat last spring term." FML
Today, my brother was arrested for starting a fistfight at a funeral. He didn't even know the deceased; he's just been crashing funerals recently, hoping to hook up with mourners. I'm not sure who's more pathetic: him for doing such a thing, or me for bailing his fucking dumb arse out of jail. FML
Today, my little brother learned about mortality when our dog died. Since then, he's gone a little nuts and keeps ranting that he sees no point as to why our other dog should live. He's 16. FML
Today, I learned that my brother isn't going to have a funeral because my dad and stepmom can't afford one. FML
Today, I got a new, short haircut. Now I look like my little brother who died two years ago. FML
Today, my brother learned how to fake cry. I've been catching shit for everything I've done and said near him ever since. FML
Today, my younger brother got in engaged. When we had a conversation about the wedding, he asked why the hell would I be involved with any of it! He used to be my best friend. I don’t know what happened. FML
Today, my brother's life was ripped apart. His wife has chosen to no longer be his wife and is trying to keep his dog as well. My brother has always been proud of his family and hopeful for the future. He will spring back, but this came out of left field. FML
Today, I was told I have a brother… By a stranger in a parking lot, while leaving my grandfather's wake. FML
Today, my little brother got a tattoo honoring our mom who abused us. The only reason I stayed was to protect him. I feel like I wasted my life. FML

I feel your loss having done similar for two brothers. Doing things is not what life is about. It is our relationships that matter. Focus on that. Was he a father? Husband/boyfriend? How about any neices/nephews? How was he with his friends or the rest of the family? Many funeral homes now have a questionnaire to help with this. for a school program I even had to write my son's obituary. They do make you think about those relationships. And although this is a horrific situation, learn from it. Not about going and doing Things, but become the friend/spouse/person who you want to be so you are remembered, how you want to be remembered. The thing is that the two can be very similar. focus on a good relationship to build on.

You don’t need to have “done” anything to just be. You can be loved for who you are regardless of what you’ve “achieved”. I’m so, so sorry to hear about your brother, and I wish you and your family the strength to keep going despite the pain.

I wrote a eulogy for myself a while back - Just because I thought that for once it would be nice if the deceased had written their own eulogy. Only a braggart would focus on their “accomplishments”. In the end, it’s relationships that matter most - starting with your closest and moving out to your extended family and friends, etc… “Accomplishments” mostly count at the end for what they enabled you to do for those important to you. My own father was a good man and had a decent life - But at the end most people focused on how he had impacted his family. That’s not the stuff that makes the papers (except in the obituaries) but it’s how most people actually affect the world… By the way writing or delivering an obituary for a family member is one of the emotionally hardest things you are likely to ever do. You have my heartfelt condolences.
