Today, I woke up to the fire department at my house. Why? My brother called 911 thinking there was a fire after turning the heat on for the first time all winter. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I had to call 911. Why? My fireplace caught on fire. FML
Today, my brother woke me up by trying to light my bed on fire. FML
Today, I woke up thinking my house was on fire because I could hear crackling flames downstairs. I panicked and tripped out of bed. It was the fireplace channel I left on last night so I could wake up to a Christmas ambiance. FML
Making a scene
Today, a guy I been seeing went to work and left me in his house. As I made a bagel, it burned, the smoke alarm went off. This activated a call to the fire department but I didn’t know. The fire truck showed up. Little did I know, the guy’s family was outside too, just to see what had happened, thinking I'd broken in. FML
Today, my smoke alarm went off. In a frenzy, I called 9-1-1 and exited my house. Several minutes later a fire truck showed up. After investigating, one of the firemen informed me I needed to change the batteries in my smoke alarm. FML
FIRE!
Today, I was sleeping in my apartment when I woke up to the smell of smoke. Alarmed, I ran out to the kitchen to find my roommates trying to put out a fire on the stove. As soon as they saw me, they ran for it, informing me that it was my problem now. They used my good frying pan. FML
Make it stop
Today, I was looking forward to my only day to sleep-in this month while I'm balancing school and work. I was rudely awakened at 6 am by my sister and her friend trying to make pancakes, burning them, and setting off the fire alarm in my house for half an hour. FML
Our house, was a very very very nice house
Today, my house caught on fire. After it was put out, I realized the damage wasn't bad, mainly smoke damage. I went to my parents' for the night because my house smelled. While there, I received a phone call from my neighbor. Apparently, my house caught fire again. It's now a pile of ashes. FML
Today, I was awoken by my neighbor pounding on my back door at 3 am, only to look outside and see my car engulfed in flames. FML
Ventilation
Today, I woke up at 4 a.m. to the smell of something burning. My husband and I checked the house, and I was convinced there was possibly an electric fire. Went back to bed, then when I woke again I remembered I'd straightened my hair the day before and that’s what the burnt smell was. FML

Your brother is a moron. I hope the firefighters/your parents lectured him on common sense.

How else did he think heat worked?

If your parents are smart, if he gets an allowance (if he’s underage), they’ll withhold it until further notice. Otherwise, if he’s not, make him pay the fine.

When you start it for the first time for the winter there is dust that burns and that is probably what happened

It could be electric, and he smelled the dust burning off the coils.

Exactly. Better safe, than sorry. Dust burning off smells a lot like an electrical fire.

I feel like I'm missing something important that's different in your area... Why exactly did he think there's a fire from the heater turning warm?

I am guessing it was the first time they turned it on in awhile so he smelt burning dust and got scared

As stupid as it sounds, I could see this happening. Electric, or gas, furnaces naturally collect dust during the downtime of summer. As soon as the heating coils warm up, or the gas burner ignites, it can burn the dust off of the main air passage. The result, as one can imagine, is the 'lovely' smell of scorched dust, which smells remarkably like something burning. If he's not used to forced-air heating, and grew up around radiator-based heat, it's certainly possible that he'd panic at the smell of burning dust.

Let your brother know this is normal and don’t let them say he is an moron. It is the burning of dust. It is completely normal so dont be mad at him.

Fire departments (at least in my area) get called for that pretty frequently at the beginning of winter.
