Today, I finally got up the nerve to leave my boyfriend. We have no spark and quite honestly, it's been really awkward. I planned to tell him when he came in, and I did. After all was said and done, he handed me the roses and new puppy he had bought for me, a puppy that I had been saving up to get. FML

Today, I finally worked up the courage to tell my boyfriend that I wanted to go separate ways. Before I could say anything, he proposed. FML
Today, I had finally summoned the courage to break up with my boyfriend, something I've needed to do for a long time. Right before my speech, he presented me with tickets to my favorite band a month from now. FML
Today, after laying down to sleep, my boyfriend seemed like he was having trouble trying to say something. After asking what was wrong a couple of times, he said, "I don't want to do this anymore" and got up and left. I had planned on telling him I love him. Saved myself some embarrassment I guess. FML
Today, my boyfriend sent me a bouquet of roses with a message attached. The message said, "Ever since your dog died you've stopped putting out, so I think we should break up." FML
Today, I finally worked up the courage to break up with my boyfriend. His parents weren't able to pick him up for 5 hours. I ended up taking him to a movie to kill time and end on a positive note, but now he thinks we're cool and back on track. FML
Today, I broke up with my boyfriend. I had only been dating him for about a month. Thinking he wouldn't take it very hard, I invited him over so I could tell him in person. Little did I know he was going to start crying on my couch and not leave for 5 hours. FML
Today, I got a rose from my boyfriend. The card read, "It's over." FML
Today, I got an email saying the gift I'd ordered for my boyfriend of three years had been sent. I ordered it a couple of days ago because I thought he needed cheering up. I guess he found a better way of doing so himself; he broke up with me yesterday. FML
Today, I went over to my boyfriend's house to break up with him. When I got there, I got sent on a scavenger hunt that ended with him proposing to me. FML
Today, I went to go meet my boyfriend at a restaurant to tell him it just wasn't working out. Before I could do so, he proposed. I had to tell him no, so he started to cry and ran out. Everyone looked at me like some kind of monster. FML

My guess is that he probably had the puppy and flowers hidden, maybe in his car, to surprise her.

Should that have changed the situation somehow? A relationship that has soured is just that. If your mind can be changed by superficial gifts, then you need to rethink your priorities. OP held solid. Boyfriend had the choice whether or not to give the gifts still, and he did. I don't think their presence should have automatically changed the decision to break it off... Regardless of whether they were in the car, or in his hands, or hiding in a closet, or whatever.

Being a guy it would have broke my heart. But honestly. Now that I'm older, it would have hurt... but I would have gotten over it because you weren't happy. You can't force someone to love you or even hope someone will change their mind about staying. You did the right thing.....

That was sweet of him, and it’s good you broke up with him. It’s not just being honest, but also it gives him the chance to find someone who does have that spark with him and that he can give that love and attention to.

Our office puppy does not make much noise and half the time you don't know he is there.

Ok, now take the puppy and flowers and go. you aren't happy and you'll still break up with him in the end. no point in staying just because of guilt or obligation.
