Today, it was my birthday. I asked my mom that instead of a present if she would make a donation to my favourite charity. She said that this wasn't a "proper" present for a 15-year-old girl. Instead she got me a kettle because "ours had broke and you make the most tea in the family." FML

Today, it was my birthday. My family usually gives me a financial gift, but didn't this time and said nothing about it. I cooked my own birthday dinner without help, then washed everyone's dishes. I got my own cake and ate it alone because they were too busy getting drunk. Nobody bothered to sing Happy Birthday either. FML
Today, I told my family that for my birthday I didn’t want to do any chores and just wanted the house cleaned. What they heard was mom won’t do chores today so let’s leave them all for her tomorrow. I didn’t even have a clean mug for coffee this morning. FML
Today, it's my birthday. My girlfriend gave me the present she'd bought for me. I said, joking, "I hope it's not a tie!" It was a tie. FML
Today, was my mom's birthday. I recently got my first job, thanks to her, and could finally afford to buy her something nice. I spent my first paycheck ever on buying her a very nice bracelet. She said it was nice, then asked if I would mind if she exchanged it for one she actually liked. FML
Today, for my mom's 50th birthday, all she wanted was a certain gold bracelet. It was too much money for me to buy, so I bought the same one in silver. Right before I gave it to her, my older sister gave her the gold bracelet, which made her cry. When I gave her my present, she just said, "Oh." FML
Today, my mother flipped out that I spent $20 on a gift for myself for my birthday. Instead of getting a gift for me, she spent $300 on a new vacuum cleaner, and claims that we didn't have enough left in our budget to spend on me. FML
Today, it's my birthday. My parents, with whom I live, told me that they didn't get me anything, but instead they said they would knock off a bit of the housekeeping I owe them. FML

Sell the kettle on ebay and donate the money. No, seriously, this is a bitch move. Why completely ignore someone's wish, give them something completely unrelated and less thoughtful, when the wish wasn't financially unreasonable or in another way unrealistic? And before the "be grateful you got anything, the poor kids in Nigeria don't even have food" comments start rolling in: Yeah, getting a kettle is better than nothing. Not getting something she asked for, which needn't be more expensive than a kettle, being dismissed with a statement like 'this isn't a proper present for you' and then getting a piece of household equipment isn't exactly great though. If the mother had said she didn't agree with the goals of this particular charity or whatever, I'd said 'fine', but this reason of dismissal is just.... I don't know. Not nice. And buying something the family needs anyway and disguising it as a gift isn't exactly loving and thoughtful either. But maybe that's just me. If you lived on your own, fine, but ... yeah, not like this I guess.
