Today, during a phone call, I broke down in tears because I was asked to spell my last name. It’s sixteen letters long and hyphenated, and I always end up having to spell it twice because they never get it right the first time. I’m tired. FML

Today, I was so nervous about a medical exam I was about to take, that I misspelled my own first name. It only has three letters. FML
Today, I've gotten so used to people mispronouncing my last name, even after I correct them a gazillion times, I've lost the motivation to correct anyone on it anymore. At this point I'd probably faint from shock if someone who isn't related to me successfully pronounced it correctly. FML
Today, I found out I've been misspelling my middle name for 25 years. FML
Today, after 26 years of confusion with my parents pronouncing it different ways, and in my mom's case, multiple ways, having to clear up how it's spelled every time I meet someone, I asked my mom how to pronounce my name. She got mad and then pronounced it three different ways while explaining. FML
Today, while not feeling well at work, I had to finish up some papers. I was so out of it, I couldn't remember how to spell my name. I had to improvise by pronouncing each syllable of my name out loud. My boss now thinks I'm a dumbass. FML
Today, for what seems like the thousandth time, one of my new friends has cut me out of their life after I told them my last name. It’s hyphenated and I’m a woman, which means I'm “automatically” a stuck-up bitch. I'm not married, I was born with this last name. FML
Today, I was talking to a new friend when I told him my last name. It’s hyphenated. He then left and declared me to be a "stuck-up bitch" who thinks she’s "too good to take a man’s last name." This is the name I was born with. FML
Today, I saw my original birth certificate and realised I’ve spent almost all my life misspelling my first name. Now I’m worried it might invalidate pretty much every legal document I’ve ever signed. FML
Today, I was so nervous introducing myself to my new team, I actually mispronounced my own name, badly, and now that’s how everyone refers to me, but again, I’m too nervous to correct anyone. It’s been a week already, so correcting them now would be extra weird. FML
Today, my 3 year-old was trying to learn some simple spelling. She then proceeded to have an absolute meltdown because I said my name doesn’t have an ‘N’ in it. My name is Gary. FML

As a person who doesn't know military alphabet AND has a hyphenated long-a** name, I can assure you that it's not working. Also, I feel your pain, OP.

If you don’t know military alphabet, how do you know it doesn’t work? My name has 15 letters and a hyphen and if I speak slow enough military alphabet sure helps people to write it right the first time.

i know the struggle, my first name is only 8 letters long, and a common name, but there is 10 different ways to spell it, and mine is the least common. so i always have to spell it out and then explain that it's in one word, not two and not with a "-" in it. when you've done it your whole life it becomes annoying

Strange enough to me, I have a very common American English name. When I would move to a new town I would check the phone directory and always find at least one person with my same first and last name. But when I tell people my name and I want them to get it right I still have to spell it! It seems like at some point we all have to spell our names - But I understand that some names are a lot easier to communicate than others. You have two choices - Make the best of the name you were given or change it to one you prefer. Either will work and both will have their difficulties. While it won’t help you on the phone, you could get a batch of cards printed up with your name and phone number to give to people when you meet them in person if they are having trouble understanding your name.
