Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, I realized how bad my family is as I slept over at my girlfriend's house and I finally got all the reasons why I like being there: I love her parents like they're mine. They give me, as well as her, lots of hugs, tell me they care about me, and make me feel welcome. Why aren't my folks like that? FML
Today, I was in the car with my mom. We were discussing my brother, how he's been screwing up majorly lately and she blamed it on his friends. Then she turned to me and said, "It's a good thing you've never had any friends." FML
Today, I learned for the first time it's possible to love your children, but not to like them at all. I learned this from my own dad, who told me he will always love me, but he never really liked me much, so now that I've moved out, he doesn't see much reason for us to see each other anymore. FML
Today, I went out with my parents and a family friend. After saying goodbye to the friend and as soon as the elevator doors shut, my parents started trash-talking the friend's looks, stature, choice of clothes, etc. Now I understand a lot about my education growing up. FML
Today, I met my biological parents for the first time, 29 years into my life. They turned out to be two of the most pathetic people I have ever met, and the meeting ended after they asked me to lend them money because I "literally owe them my life." FML
Today, I met my paternal grandparents for the first time, since my dad was never in my life and my mom wouldn’t talk about him. According to them, I have at least 28 other siblings from him, and who knows how many that haven’t come forward. No wonder my mom always hated him. FML
Today, I approached my mother for comfort, because I've been feeling depressed and unloved by anyone lately. She replied, “Honestly, I stopped loving you back when you were a toddler.” FML
Today, I spent my first day with my parents for the first time in a year as I've been away at university. My dad went to work, and my mum spent the whole day playing mahjong with her friends as they all told me "how fat I've gotten" and how "boys won't like it". FML
Today, I was at my cousin's wedding. In the toasts they talked about how my parents became their second parents and my sister became their new sister, while they've never been a real family to me. I felt like that's my fault, then I felt self-centered thinking about that while others celebrated and confessed their love. FML
Today, I noticed that I feel the loneliest when I'm with my family. I was raised in group homes for most of my childhood and I'm sure my mother doesn't want me, and she hasn't for years. My brothers used to disappear as kids and just do what they wanted, whereas I'd be home before curfew and I rarely acted out but still I'm unwanted. FML

Hang out at your friend's house more. Maybe you'll get some of the excess parental love aimed at your friend.

My Mom has told me that her parents did not express love verbally. While her mom was “normal” to me as a grandmother growing up, her father seemed to have a bad attitude. In retrospect I think he was depressed. My Mom told me that when I was born and she loved me that she said to herself “So this is what love feels like.” Mom says that she tried her best to show her children the love that she had missed out on. My Dad’s family was more “normal” and supportive than Mom’s and when Dad and Mom first got married they lived with Dad’s parents for a while. I think this may also have influenced Mom. Some people, some parents are just not very demonstrative of their love. It doesn’t always mean they don’t love their family, sometimes it just means they never learned how to properly express that love. Hopefully this is the case with OP’s family. OP, you cannot “fix” your parents. But you can learn from others how love is expressed in a healthy relationship and apply this to your life from here on out. You could even have a one on one talk with your Mom or Dad (in a non-confrontational way) about your feelings and ask why they don’t express love like other families you have seen. But be careful, you don’t want to make things worse by being perceived as critical. Be aware that the downside of expressing love is that it leaves you vulnerable to hurt feelings if it is not reciprocated. But the risk is by far worth the effort.
