Today, I found out that the friend I stayed up with for nights on end, talking out of depression and suicide, has "politely" posted up on Facebook that he secretly hates me. FML

I had a similar situation, turned out she was bipolar, that may be the case with your "friend" too.

There's only so much a guy can take from whiny bitches. I'm sure your conversations were all about you and never about him. If you want to be a friend, you have to take an interest in them, as opposed to always bumming them out with your self-indulgent, self-destructive rambling. Don't use a "friend" as a free therapist. You ought to teach him a lesson and keep living.

I take it this is more or less your only experience with individuals with severe clinical depression, and that many of the commenters on this page have no experience at all with dealing with other individuals suffering through chronic depression? Your friend often hates everything about his life. He probably goes through phases where he perceives every single thing around him as part of the system that's driving him to despair. That includes you. It's part of his illness. Dealing with someone with that kind of disorder is NOT easy, and if you can't handle it, you should get out for your own sake. But if you're going to stick around, he is sometimes going to hate you, even if you're the single most positive influence in his life. He's sometimes going to manipulate situations to make you look like the bad guy, to reflect that he feels you're controlling him. He's sometimes going to be angry at you and even borderline verbally abusive towards you, because you're probably the only person in his life who he can safely lash out at. And of course when he's feeling better, you can expect him to realize that you're a good friend. If you can't deal with ANY of this, get out, cut your emotional ties and let him deal with someone else.
