Today, an elderly woman couldn't afford all of her groceries at the checkout so she started to take out a few things. I offered to pay for her groceries; she thanked me and walked out. An onlooker then came up to me and told me that she does it to someone every week. FML

Today, at the supermarket, an old lady asked for directions to the produce aisle. Having read way too many stories lately on this very site about awful elderly folks, I was wary, but helped her out. She gave me an awkward hug in thanks, lifting my wallet in the process, as I later found out. FML
Today, I spent twenty minutes helping an elderly man figure out how to use the self-checkout. When we'd finished, he smiled, thanked me, then walked away… without paying for any of his groceries. The cashier assumed I was with him. FML
Today, I helped a lady carry her grocery bags to her car. She was so grateful that she offered me a tip. I refused, but she insisted. When I finally took it, I looked at the bill to see she'd given me $1. I smiled and said thank you, but she looked at me like I’d just robbed her. FML
Today, I asked an elderly customer at my work if she needed help with her groceries. She responded, "I normally would, but I'm afraid you'll eat all the groceries." FML
Today, while standing in line at the grocery store, the elderly lady in front of me had forgotten to pay for her milk. In the spirit of the season, I paid for it and wished her happy holidays. She snatched the milk and gave me an ugly look. Then huffed at me before stomping off. FML
Today, I was shopping at the grocery market and was next in line. Behind me was a woman who only had two items, so I nicely let her in front of me, as it looked like she was in a hurry. When she was all rung up, she decided to pay her $16.45 in loose change which needed to be counted out. FML
Today, while covering lunch for the self-checkout host, I noticed a customer walking away. I smiled and said, "Have a nice night!" A few minutes later, I saw that she'd left without paying on her machine. I'd smiled and waved at a lady as she stole from me. FML
Today, I was walking home from when I passed an old woman sitting on the curb of Walmart begging for change. I gave her my last dollar and felt good about it. Five minutes later I saw the same woman driving away in a car. I don't even own a car. FML
Today, at work, an old lady came through my line to buy some groceries. She told me she lost her purse and was a little short. It was busy, so I pulled out my little purse and gave her the money she needed. A few minutes later she returned with my boss, insisting that my purse was hers. FML
Today, I helped an elderly woman push her grocery cart around the store, and look for her vehicle after she'd paid. After we spent ages wandering around trying to find her car, she remembered that she'd taken the bus today. FML

Wonder how often these grandparent moments have gone unnoticed. I am glad FML is here to show us how crafty they can be. I personally look forward to be the old man down the road that builds a playground in the front yard and then have a very carefully designed sprinkler system to defend it. Every time a kid comes over to play on it, they will have to cross a mine field of sensors and lasers, just to get sprayed with a subterranean water gun. Then I wanna yell at the kids to stay out of my sprinkler system.

Eh. It's possible she genuinely can't afford those items and maybe forgets every week or has some form of dementia. Then again, she might just be a really convincing hustler. Either way, considering how crappily our old folk are treated by the government in Australia, the OP can at least feel good they gave a pensioner a decent meal. It's more than many get. :(

That's what I thought. I would have called her out--loudly! This reminds me of something that happened to me. I was in a grocery store parking lot when a young man approached me, telling me that he swore he wasn't a bum and that he needed money for gas and giving me a story about how his four month old child was stranded in his car. I told him I'd like to help him, so if he would just wait a few minutes I'd be back with a gas can. Then he got all defensive, saying he was offended that I didn't trust him, and left. I called the cops and told them about the incident, thinking that of he was scamming people that they'd take care of it, but that if he really needed help they would help him. Unfortunately, I saw him leave before the cops arrived. Then,a few months later, I was at the mall with my boyfriend when I the same guy approached us, giving us the same bull shit story about how he swore he wasn't a bum, and how he needed money for gas because his four month old baby was stranded in his car. I yelled at him so everyone around us turned to look, saying that I remembered him from before, and that he was a con artist. He tried to speak but I just yelled at him to shut up and get lost as we walked away. The con man then yelled back to me that he was going to call the cops on me. (Pffffft! Yeah right!) I then told my bewildered boyfriends the story of how I'd met the man before, and he said we should tell mall security. We told a security guard about the guy and gave him a description. We saw the same security guard again later, and he told us that he found the guy and made him leave the mall. I think that guy was a crack head or something. I doubt the old woman in this FML is a crackhead, but she's a hustler and no better.
