Today, my 81-year-old mother threw out the packaging for a 3-day-old $1,700 monitor I was going to return due to a defect. I live in my own home, but she randomly visits to "clean up" without asking me. Now I'm stuck with an expensive, defective monitor. FML

A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I took the motherboard out of my computer so I could put more RAM and a new video card in. While I was in the bathroom my mom threw it all out because it 'looked like garbage'. FML
Today, I returned home to find out that my new and very expensive computer had overheated. I confronted my mom, and she told me that she had covered up the fan because she didn't like the noise. FML
Today, my mother took my brand new PS4, which I haven't even played yet, and threw it out the window while I was at work. When I asked her why, she said she was mad that we didn't have any paper towels left. FML
Today, I cleaned out the fridge for my mother. I didn't throw out a single thing that was less than a month past its expiration. Instead of thanks, she complained about everything that I threw away being still good, including a tub of butter that had been expired for two years. FML
Today, like every day for the past two years, my aged mother has sat complaining all day loudly about relatives who call too little or too much, about another package being a few days late, or her laptop and TV not working properly. All while I'm trying to quietly work from home. I'm about ready to jump off a bridge. FML
Today, my mum is convinced I'm a hoarder. While I was out of the house, she went through my room and threw out stuff I "don't need." This included $500 worth of textbooks, a flash drive with crucial work on it, and my phone charger. FML
Today, I received three big boxes from my mother in law, containing expensive cookware. I was puzzled, because I know that she hates me. Turns out she mailed them to us by mistake. Not only did she not get us anything, but I now have to pay to ship the boxes to her neighbor. FML
Today, at work, I refused a customer a refund because there was nothing wrong with the item, and she didn't have the packaging. I then watched as she and her son rummaged through a public bin for the packaging. When I refused her again, she called me a "fucking idiot". FML
Today, I got a laptop for my birthday. I was thrilled until I realized that my mom had given away my old one without asking. 6 years of games, music, and pictures down the drain. FML
Today, I bought my mother an expensive TV she had been looking at. After I bought it, she continued browsing for more stuff. I told her I couldn't afford the extra items. She got mad and called me "selfish". FML

Get smart. Go buy another one. Take the packaging from that one, Return the defective one in the new packaging with the new receipt angrily demanding your money back for selling such crap for that amount of money. Problem solved.

Change you locks! Make sure your mom never gets in again without your being there. While I sympathize with the loss to OP - This was entirely preventable had he established boundaries a long time ago.

Take legal action against their elderly mother for, although being slightly intrusive, doing something that was probably based on good intentions? That's such an insane idea. I can only assume you're American because suing the pants off someone for no reason is an American ideology and solution to everything, that's not how we do things in Australia. Also, something that expensive would be covered by a manufacturers warranty for at least a year. I returned a camera that was a few weeks old with no packaging. They can't refuse to replace it.

No, I'm not American. And I'm not saying go sure her right away. However, if someone goes into your place and randomly throws things out without asking, they will have to stand up for the problems they cause no matter how old they are. It's called taking responsibility for your actions. Hence the expectation of having her pay for the damage she causes (or having her insurance cover, if applicable) I agree there should be some kind of warranty. The post made it seem like there's none, though. So I'm going with that, not knowing OP's legal situation.

Who on Earth said anything about breaking in? This site is rife with people who make massive assumptions. How do you know she didn't have a key? My mother pops over to my house to tidy up when I'm working long hours on projects at work because she LOVES me, not because she's trying to be controlling. The little old lady probably thought she was doing a favour by throwing rubbish away. So judgemental. Also on the city the OP is from if you tried to sue your mother for throwing away rubbish you'd be ridiculed by your friends, family, colleagues and any lawyer you tried to approach ??

this would work with a 99cent toy, or most other products, but a monitor has serial numbers on the back, and the same serial number on the box, if they dont match, you go to jail for fraud. do not do this.

There are legal matters to consider here, where I live they would only be obliged to repair it or replace it if you want to return it for being defective. Then you would be stuck with two fully functioning monitors (which might not be the worst but still). My scout group ended up with three identical tents rather than one due to some misunderstandings and coincidences regarding this.

I do this when I throw away the packaging and the item fails within 30 days or so. But, OP's monitor may have a serial number on it, and it may have to match the serial on the box. Who knows. With a receipt he should be fine to return it, especially if it has a serial number to match the receipt! People throw their packaging away all the time. Just ask for a replacement!

Set boundaries. Change locks. Involve the police if necessary. Family ties aren't a magic spell, and they don't entitle anyone to screw with anyone else's life.
