Capitalism kills
Today, the county I live in is quarantined. My boss announced that, "We keep working until the government says they will shoot us if we leave the house.” We work in a call center. Not essential at all. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, the prison program I work for has been shut down for months due to Covid, but my bosses have been having us sitting at our desks, doing nothing, in proximity to the inmates. I guess they'd rather pay us to be exposed than to stay safe. FML
Today, everyone has been advised to stay home and self-quarantine due to the COVID19 outbreak. This would've been great and all, especially since I'm pregnant and need the bed rest, but I work as a doctor and we're understaffed. FML
Today, I have a doctor’s note confirming that I'm high risk for Covid and should only work from home. My boss still demands I come to the office, even though the only person I meet there is the guy who sterilizes the door handles. FML
Today, exactly 19 seconds after I logged on, my boss Zoom-called me to let me know 3 people are out sick, probably until Monday, so if I wouldn’t mind doing their work as well so we don’t fall behind, within working hours, no overtime available. He wasn’t happy when I told him no. FML
Today, my coworker tested positive for Covid. Here's to working 11 hours shifts for the next 10 days to help cover. FML
Today, on the first day of the first week off together with my family in six months, we’re all quarantined with positive COVID tests. By the time we’re off quarantine, I’ll be back at work. FML
Today, I tested positive for COVID. This wouldn’t be a big deal, except my entire family has now fallen like a stack of dominos, and despite being asymptomatic, I now have to quarantine. My work stopped doing COVID leave in November. FML
Today, my boss gave me attitude for not going to back to work this Friday. I'm a massage therapist and where I live, it's currently illegal to practice during the pandemic. FML
Today, it's the last day of my three-week vacation, during which I couldn't go anywhere due to COVID and lockdown. I just learned that some of my colleagues are infected and I will have to fill in for two department superintendents at the same time when I go back to work tomorrow. FML
Today, over half of my coworkers have called out for various reasons and my manager is on her third week of vacation. My coworkers keep calling out. I'm the only closer. I just want a day off. FML

He can’t be serious. Is it cause he knows everyone is home and more likely to answer their phone? Regardless, that’s awful.

You're still earning a paycheck. However, many call centers (both my sister in law and I work at call centers) are sending their employees home. My employer handed me a box with a company computer and sent me on my way. Plug in at home and I'm set to work without 2,000 coworkers sharing viruses. If nothing else works, maybe tell your employer about your friend that you visit with everyday who just tested positive.

At least you still have a job. Do you know how many people have been laid off or had their hours cut? It sucks that you have to risk being around other people. Your boss should set up a way for you all to work from home, but it could be worse. Company’s are going to be losing so much money and there will be some that will have to go bankrupt/close. You HAVE a job.

It's essential for your boss to make money. QED. Unless your coworkers are sitting in your lap, working at a call center seems like a pretty safe job. You don't have to deal with the public face-to-face. Be glad that you're employed as long as possible. The government bailout is likely to be disappointing.

Are OP’s co-workers not the public? If you don’t want to put yourself at risk - say, you live at home with an elderly parent or someone with asthma - then you should not be forced to be among “the public.” It sucks some people are in a position where they can’t make money that they need. But it also sucks when you want to choose not to put yourself at risk and you’re forced to. People like this are part of the problem of why it keeps spreading so the US will eventually look like Italy and Spain where the virus got out of control, instead of the virus being contained and wiped out like in Japan and South Korea, where they actually care about their populations over profit. But yaknow...Capitalism/‘Murica/etc.

That’s pretty cool that your boss found a way for you all to work from home. Perfect solution - still make money/contribute to the economy without putting yourself and others at risk. I feel this will be long-term for many businesses where a lot of jobs will become work-from-home.

Then report them.

Op here, I understand not a lot of people are working which does make me thankful but I am pregnant and also have a 16 month old that was born premature with lung issues so I’m definitely concerned. But since the post I’ve been able to express that to my employer and make adjustments! Stay safe and healthy everyone!!
