Today was my birthday, my boyfriend took me out to see a movie I didn't want to watch and we had dinner at a fast food restaurant. For his last birthday, I got him a $200 knife and took him out to a fine dining restaurant. FML

Or, just as plausible is that he doesn't care as much about OP as they do about him. In fact, him caring less is MORE likely than it being financial, considering that he didn't even let OP choose the movie.

You can save up money to treat your SO. I bet OP had to save a bit to buy a 200 dollar knife and still take him to a nice restaurant. And he obviously didn't care if he took her a movie she didn't want to see. It is obvious he doesn't care about her or he would have at least taken her to a movie she wanted to see.
