So he basically told you the same thing twice... "I want to get married and have kids" means "I want to experience death".
You didn't tell him he could kill two birds. Some people regard marriage to be like death.

Original poster here, I can't believe this got posted! So my boyfriend and I have been together for what's coming up to 6 years, but he's always been very shy and reserved when talking about his feeling or futue. Hence him saying he wanted to marry me and have my babies was a big deal. A few years ago he struggled with depression, but he now swears he has it undercontrol. I guess it was just a bit bittersweet, hearing something you've been waiting 6 years for, and then being reminded that it's probably not ever going to happen. His mental health comes first.
