Today, I'm in the process of adopting a child. When I called my mom to tell her the news, she just said, "Oh honey, don't adopt, it's the worst decision you'll ever make." I'm adopted. FML

She's most likely just saying that because you have to raise a child and then when they're old enough you have to tell them they were adopted and I'm pretty sure it's not easy

Why do you have to wait to tell them? Why should they not always know? Why is being adoptive something that should be a deep, dark secret until the child is old enough to have their identity rocked by the sudden revelation, when you could just tell the kid all along that (for whatever reason) their birth parents couldn't take care of them, so they (or, in some cases, CPS) wanted to make sure that they could get raised by someone who could take care of them? When I adopt, my kids will always know.

I really hope she's kidding...or maybe she's just disappointed she won't get the perfectly made grandkids that she wants...either way that's really distasteful and you should call her out on it.

Unless you don't have a good reason such as a reproductive issue then it's a better idea to have a kid who is like you genetically. Also how old are you? What financial status are you in? Maybe your mother meant you weren't ready to adopt

Yeah, **** all those orphan kids! Let's keep breeding and let the orphans rot! That's a ******* terrible thing to say. Adoption is something more people should consider, there are so many kids out there who would give anything for a family.

Humans are overpopulated as it is. There's lots of kids without homes, it doesn't depend on your genetics, it depends on what you personally want. Sure, my fiancee and I are adopting because of bad genetics from us, but that doesn't mean we couldn't have our own children, and even without the problems, we'd still adopt.

Wanting to give an existing child a loving home isn't a good reason? There are so many children out there who are without loving homes and families, and anyone who decides to bring some of those kids into their homes and raise them and love them are doing a wonderful thing. And reading some of your responses, I don't ******* care if you think it's better to have kids "the normal way." I'm sure kids who were adopted into loving homes and who didn't have families before might disagree with you. Families are built on love, not DNA and twelve hours of labor.

Just...wow. :-( But thank you for choosing to adopt a kid. We'll probably foster (adoption is ungodly expensive) in a few years, and I can't see why anyone would say it's a bad move. You're getting a kid without having to carry it and go through labor; that's the only difference I see between adopted and birth kids. I hope you really love being a parent. Best of luck to you and your child, and best of luck to your mom for removing either her foot from her mouth or her head from her ass.....
