Thanks for the unsolicited advice!

Today, my mother once again brought up how I would have done so much better in my Track season if I just smiled while I ran. Apparently, if you just smile, your brain won't know you're in pain. I don't think it works like that, but thanks for the advice mom. FML

I feel that strategy only works when you're on ecstasy.

Oh, I've actually heard this. One of those stupid myths. Tell her that the most successful running advice is to listen to your body and to stop when you're in pain.

Smiling would probably make you performed worse because your wasting energy smiling, instead of running.

I'm not sure whys it's getting down voted, it's true. Relaxing your face when you run is best.

It's true you should listen to your body and stop before too long but your body will still operate through pain. If you change your thought process it helps to shut down your focus on only pain allowing you to go further

Actually smiling when you run prevents your upper body from tensing up and it actually dies improve your speed

When I was in track and cross country, there was a guy on our team who would always be smiling whenever he ran. He also happened to be one of the fastest people on our team. He still suffered from a lot of jokes from the teammates about him smiling all the time.

OP, the point ur mother is trying to make, is that smiling or thinking something that makes u smile, can distract you from pain temporary. She is not telling you to ignore ur body pain all the time, maybe just for the race.

Ugh... Sorry, OP. I can't stand ignorant people. Hope you get to clear things up with her!
