So long, grandpa

Today, I took home my grandpa's ashes. I then went out with my grandma, leaving my 5-year-old at home with my 12-year-old. When I got home, my beaming 5-year-old opened the door, covered in white powder. My grandmother asked where all the powder had come from. She pointed to the empty ashbox. FML

Common sense should have been used here: Keep out of reach of children.

That is so awful. Why the hell did you leave something that important where your five-year-old could get at it?? Why was she not informed that this was an absolutely hands-off item? Why was she beaming? There is so much wrong with this. Your poor, poor grandmother. :(

i'm sorry that it happened, but YDI for leaving a 5-year-old in the care of a 12-year-old. a kid that age is barely old enough to take care of him/herself alone at home, let alone a small child. you should have hidden the ashes and/or gotten an older babysitter. then again, since the kids are both old enough to understand consequences, you could have just told them that the box was very important and if anything happened to it you would be really sad/mad, or else that they would both get in big trouble.

Why was it within reach of your five year old?

I've been left home alone since I was 9. There is no legal age for staying home alone. It's just a trust issue. My parents trusted that I could stay home alone, and they were right.

The 12-year-old WAS the babysitter, genius. 12 year old is PLENTY old enough to babysit, if you didn't raise your kids to be complete pieces of crap.

really? then why did the ashes spill? Your just as smart as OP aren't you?

Either the 12-year-old gets grounded for not paying attention, or you didn't brief him on the situation. Someone screwed up here, and it wasn't just the 5-year-old. Also, Vegetables makes a good point.

Remember....oranges don't leave bruises on the kids ;-)

Is it legal to leave kids that age home alone? I always thought they had to be 13.

Wow, I'd never leave a 5 year old alone with a 12 year old. >.

Recipe for a good time: Lean down and whisper in your daughter's ear, "You're covered in the ashy, burned remains of your great-grandfather. His corpse dust is in your mouth and up your nose." Then watch the reaction. Granted, you'll have to pay all the therapy bills, but who said fun didn't come with a price, amirite?!

Kids do the darndest things. My great grandmother died when I was 4, and all of us great grandchildren got a small handful of her ashes to spread out along a field of wildflowers next to her house. I didn't really understand. And I figured the dog needed some coating. Needless to say, within 5 minutes, my handful had converted our Scottish terrier into a bichon frise. RIP, granny.
