Today, I found a wallet on the train. I called the owner, who said he would come around and pick it up. When he finally did, he looked inside and screamed that his money was missing, and that I was a dirty thief. I never took a cent. He's filing theft charges against me. FML

Wow that really sucks.

#1 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:03pm by rxxk

Not really; the unappreciative bastard can't prove the OP took the money. It won't hold up in court.

FYL for being sued for doing the right thing.
YDI to the guy who lost the wallet in the first place. Hopefully he gets a case of identity theft on the side.

#57 - On 08/06/2009 at 3:42pm by spazzdoodle

But the OP is still going to have to pay for a lawyer. Unless it goes to small claims court. Either way it's a waste of the OP's time and unnecessary stress.

Fuck you you racist prick. For one the OP never mentioned their race. Secondly Even if they did that doesn't change a damn thing. Trolls like you have no lives.

#68 - On 08/06/2009 at 4:31pm by Pan22

it really does, I know, it happened to me, I work at a gas bar and someone brought in a walltet, called the guy and started yelling at me about the missing cash.

#73 - On 08/06/2009 at 4:57pm by maillway

Most likely somebody pickpocketed the wallet from out his pants, took the cash and dropped it on the floor. Enter you, who finds it, and add the fact the guy is a total dumbass. Dont worry, it wount hold up in court.

#78 - On 08/06/2009 at 5:21pm by captainamerica50

What a perfect scam.

Leaving your wallet somewhere with no cash and only an ID or something to call the owner, then press charges if a sucker is dumb enough to call and return the wallet.

Genius!

#89 - On 08/06/2009 at 8:03pm by sonazn

well, she/he should of just left it on the train.

#102 - On 08/07/2009 at 2:19am by haleycstar

I think cash in a wallet is small claims...

#104 - On 08/07/2009 at 6:06am by Shots_HK

Also the owner is going to have to prove conclusively that a) There was cash in the wallet and b) that you stole it.

Countersue for defamation of character and get one of those No Win, No Fee sleazebags to take the case.

She deserves it because she called the fucker when the wallet was empty.. Don't you think it would be wise to check to see if there's money first before calling them and saying you found it without getting blamed for stealing their money? But I guess most people don't have common sense.

#38 - On 08/06/2009 at 3:06pm by Crickets

38 fails.
Common courtesy exists, you know. That way the guy doesn't have to pay for a new license, cancel his visa, get a new debit card, and all the hassle of whatever else was in there. But I guess when all you think about is the douche-bag side of things, you miss out on stuff like that.

#44 - On 08/06/2009 at 3:15pm by Crickets

Hardly, I imagine there were probably licenses and such in there. I doubt anyone would really call someone up to tell them they lost their wallet if it was just a empty wallet. :/

#69 - On 08/06/2009 at 4:39pm by BLNovelist

uhh guys same way she figured out what the dudes number was, she had to open the wallet and fish through for the guys ID therefore you could notice how much cash is in it

#71 - On 08/06/2009 at 4:41pm by rotf_coaster_9

she could have known how much money was there TO BEGIN WITH. which, incidentally, is what skullet said. but sure, ignore that.
anyway, you guys are dumb paranoid douchebags. even if it didn't have money, it obviously had at least a driver license, probably one or more credit/debit cards as well. i personally think that the shit someone who loses those has to go through warrants calling them to return the wallet. and why would any of you assume someone you called to RETURN THEIR WALLET to would blame you?

#74 - On 08/06/2009 at 4:58pm by copypaste

They're almost required... toll booths are obviously the work of Satan. :D

#3 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:03pm by littlemotel6

the whole thing was a set up

#16 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:16pm by gene818

I thought the same thing! Puts an empty wallet with some old ID in it, expecting someone to turn it in (perhaps for a reward) because there's no money to take from it. Then, when the person turns it in (i.e., our OP here) the con artist claims the samaritan took the money that was never in there. Bam, lawsuit filed in hopes of being a dick and taking their money through the law.

Or, the fucker that lost the wallet could just be an enormous, dumb asshole.

#61 - On 08/06/2009 at 3:56pm by cpatrick820

Agreed #61.

It is also possible for another person to have already gotten to the wallet and taken the money before the OP found it.

#67 - On 08/06/2009 at 4:14pm by teehee520

ha your life blows and i would probably do the same thing

#4 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:03pm by tpag3r

so let me get this straight, hes going to tell a cop and potentially a judge you are a good Samaritan. I hope you are there when they laugh him out of the room.

#70 - On 08/06/2009 at 4:40pm by spoo

I would tell him go ahead and file charges- he didn't SEE you take the money, which you didn't, and he can't prove it. End of story.

This is why people don't do nice things anymore- cuz it bites them in the butt.

#5 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:03pm by beerab

Wow what an asshole. If someone really wanted to steal your money they wouldn't call, and let you know your wallet is missing. -_-

#6 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:04pm by Inked2009

#6 +1

Tell him he has no evidence that you stole it, and then get some common sense. Thiefs don't want to be caught. They also don't call back to return an item they stole from.

#12 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:10pm by Shenaniganss

AWWW!!! Hell no! I would have never called that number if I knew. I would have kept that damn wallet. Anyway, tell the damn dummy if you did take money you would have never called him.

#7 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:04pm by hottiegurl

Wow. That guy is dumb. IF you stole the money why would you return the wallet to him afterwords?

#15 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:14pm by mrlucky4444

Uhh no, the right thing is to pick up the wallet and return it to the owner.

I have lost my wallet and someone mailed it to me, and I actually didnt have a single dollar in it...just plastic. I live in NY, so it saved me $15 bucks for a new license, AND I got all my membership cards as well as gift cards back.

The man could have just as easily had NO money in his wallet to begin with.

I am grateful for the gentleman who took the time to send me my wallet back... I even wrote a letter to the return address that was on the envelope.

#80 - On 08/06/2009 at 5:43pm by brilliantbarbie

You were being helpful. It sucks that the person blames you. >:(

#18 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:19pm by Ranoona

doubt charges would stand cause duh how manythirves would return the wallet.

#20 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:22pm by kaelendra

The cops will figure out that a thief wouldn't be calling the guy to return his wallet. On the other hand, you've now got the asshole's address and phone number. Useful information for pranking his bitch ass later. Way later.

I call fake.

1: How did you call him? Who leaves their phone number in their wallet?

2. Why wouldn't you just mail the wallet to the address on the drivers' license, with no return address?

#23 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:32pm by LadyAlathia

#23 you’re an idiot, a lot of people including myself leave their phone numbers in their wallet, why?

1. because it’s smart and i know if i ever lose it, people like OP will find it and call me to return it out of the goodness of their heart.

2. who the hell would ever mail a wallet back to a person? I never heard of that, if the owner was smart they would have just left a number inside, if not then too bad for them.

#51 - On 08/06/2009 at 3:33pm by UncleverName_FYL

1 - Business cards, or a number left inside. My number is in my wallet (not incase I lose it, because I forget it)

2 - Why would you pay to mail it? It's probably about $5 to send, and you're doing them I favour by even telling them.

#58 - On 08/06/2009 at 3:42pm by mobius8

Tell him go ahead and file, and in return You are going to sue his ass for defamation of Character.

Similar happened to me. At the mall in the food court, I found a purse belonging to a 16yo girl. I called the home number on the cellphone. She and her mom come to the mall to pick it up, taking an hour of my time to do it. The Mom looks inside and said "There was $20 in there, give it back.
I stood up and Yelled "No Lady, I'm not interested in having Sex with your Daughter for $20!!!" (teen Prostitution is a problem at that mall). I walked away and as I was leaving I saw her being grilled by 2 mall cops.

#26 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:33pm by 0neiros

Owned.

#30 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:53pm by bartoron

honestly, if you end up going to court, you most likely wouldnt get charged guilty for that. you FOUND the wallet. someone else took the money. theres nothing stable to pin you for it. just sayin.

#27 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:34pm by fartmouth123

Be sure to countersue for the cost of your defense.

#28 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:39pm by Uniquitous

he probably knew you didn't steal it and was probably trying to get some money from you.

#29 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:46pm by notashrimp

Just let him. You didn't take any money, you won't get in any trouble. You did the right thing and it'll come back around to you. (:

#32 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:54pm by thatssohilarious

Never do things to be nice. That is the bottom line. It always comes to bite you in the ass. People are too greedy now a days. Look out for yourself and your friends and family.

#34 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:58pm by musashi

I don't know how it works in Australia, but I know in the US if you find a lost wallet you can just put it in a mailbox and it will be sent to the address on the driver's license... for next time...

#36 - On 08/06/2009 at 2:59pm by escualida

If he does it won't matter. As it's been said, the person can't prove you stole anything.

#39 - On 08/06/2009 at 3:08pm by Chfanfiction

Why would he assume that the person returning his lost wallet to him has stolen his money? Seems unlikely. Then again, now that I think of it that would be the perfect defense: "Why would I steal his money then return his wallet to him?" But then again a thief probably wouldn't even bother and risk theft charges...but yeah he can't prove it and there's no way you'll get charged with anything.

#46 - On 08/06/2009 at 3:20pm by dramakat11

That's why when I find a wallet I put it in the blue USPS things and they just mail it to them.

#48 - On 08/06/2009 at 3:23pm by GrkGrl

This is why I stopped caring for the well-being of other people. When stuff of mine is lost or stolen, I never see the light of day of it again. And if I find something belonging to someone else, they're GOING to give me shit for it when I return it anyways!!

The nicest thing I'd do it take the money from it and turn the wallet in to the cops for them to put up with. That's the NICEST thing I'd do. Second option is just throwing the wallet away or something.

#49 - On 08/06/2009 at 3:26pm by Luckster

...yeah, stealing the money from the wallet is really nice of you. :/

Seriously, wanna be nice without being bitched at? Find their house, put the wallet in the mailbox. Problem solved.

#72 - On 08/06/2009 at 4:45pm by BLNovelist

ehhh not even that bad, any normal human being would beleave that u simply found the wallet and that the money had already been stollen, why the hell would a theif give back the mans wallet, just stupid and i hope his wallet gets stollen again for being such a dildo face

#52 - On 08/06/2009 at 3:34pm by ZombieDoodoo

his word against yours wouldn't hold up in court. if you didn't return it he wouldn't get any money, and even if you did steal he would still get some.

#53 - On 08/06/2009 at 3:39pm by PenNameHere

Next time bring it to a police station or whatever the transit authority is. Let them deal with it and don't get involved.

#63 - On 08/06/2009 at 4:00pm by FML_is_My_Life12

I'm guessing the owner thought the OP thought the owner was dumb. In any event, it sucks when you do the right thing and get scolded for it, the idiot should just be thankful that he got anything back after he lost it in a place where thousands of people could take it.

#64 - On 08/06/2009 at 4:04pm by Bombercules

See what happens when you're nice to other people?

#83 - On 08/06/2009 at 6:12pm by Twin_Uzis

It's because of dumb bitches like that person that you're not supposed to contact the person directly.

You're supposed to drop the wallet at the nearest police station and let them deal with it. That way, when the person has a pissy fit, the cops will be the ones dealing with the wacko's bullshit, and he won't be able to pull something like that.

#85 - On 08/06/2009 at 6:42pm by Moemoemoe

Exactly.

You could not be any more correct.

#105 - On 08/07/2009 at 6:54am by musu

It really doesn't matter how dumb you think they are, the charges will never stand up in court, and if the OP is really smart he/she will counter-sue for defamation of character and actually get money from the guy who he "stole" money from... can you say IRONY.

#111 - On 08/07/2009 at 3:55pm by mgsmith9

#91 - On 08/06/2009 at 10:14pm by nichole_wood

no way the charges will stand up in court. A. Why would you steal the money then wait for him to come get his wallet? B. They need evidence to prove that you took the money, like for instance, having the exact amount cash missing on your person.

#92 - On 08/06/2009 at 10:20pm by padfoot

Good news is he has no proof, and no doubt it will cost him more in legal costs than was in his wallet to begin with.

#93 - On 08/06/2009 at 10:29pm by CaptainPat

Good guys never win

#95 - On 08/06/2009 at 11:55pm by spillproof

YDI, you never personally return a wallet because if money is missing you are the automatic suspect. You either drop it in a mailbox(the post office will mail the wallet back to them) or take it to the nearest police station

#96 - On 08/06/2009 at 11:59pm by MrCanoe

Sehr gut.
Someone gets a cookie. Ahaha jk.
Yeah, MrCanoe has the right idea.

#99 - On 08/07/2009 at 1:10am by AAAAHHHH12

Why would you be the suspect? What person in their right mind would steal from a wallet then *have the person over* to pick it up from them personally? That guy's an idiot.

#97 - On 08/07/2009 at 12:14am by amidecour

Say that if you stole the money, why would you return the wallet to the owner? That'll probably get the cops off your back.

#98 - On 08/07/2009 at 12:39am by Dragonmouth

Oddly, I don't think that would deter the Po Po anyway. :/

#103 - On 08/07/2009 at 3:00am by p00p0ster0us

that's true, and people even leave the wallet behind on purpose so they can do that.

#109 - On 08/07/2009 at 1:36pm by gene818

And we wonder why there are no more good people anymore.

#108 - On 08/07/2009 at 9:17am by chr1is

If you have to hire a lawyer, you may as well sue (or counter-sue if he is pressing civil charges too) for defamation of character, cause those charges will not stand up in court, but you suing him might... this was either a set up or just some complete dumbass who doesn't realize that you wouldn't have called him if you found his wallet and took the money

#110 - On 08/07/2009 at 3:42pm by mgsmith9

If I see a wallet, purse, or anything else on the sidewalk, I just keep walking. A recent case in England (http://www.dailyexpress.co.uk/posts/view/92661/Student-arrested-for-being-honest) makes it clear that helping others is no longer worthwhile.

#112 - On 08/07/2009 at 9:57pm by Guairdean

This is not a scam. Why would anyone do a scam with a 100% failure rate? He may press charges against her in an attempt to get the money back, but this case will never even get before a judge. He will present his case, and it will be turned down. Courts don't accept cases like this with absolutely no evidence.
