We got a reader!
Today, my new boyfriend came over to my apartment for the first time. Up until now I thought he was great, but when he spotted the book I'm currently reading next to my couch, he uttered the immortal question, "Why do you read?" FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I was hanging out with my boyfriend. Everything seemed to be going well, when all of a sudden he turned to look at me with a pensive and thoughtful expression. I expected him to say something important, but instead he just said, "I was wondering, how does it feel to be fat?" FML
Today, my boyfriend invited me over for dinner for the first time. The place was full of his ex's stuff, books on the shelves, makeup in the bathroom, clothes in the closet and even shoes on the floor. Not to mention creepy plush toys staring at me. She left him 8 years ago. FML
Today, I brought my boyfriend over to meet the family. After several long moments of silence, one of my sisters burst out laughing, and asked, "Okay, who is this guy really?" FML
Today, a client stared at me in disbelief after I mentioned that I had a boyfriend. FML
Today, I asked my boyfriend why he dates me. He immediately responded, "Well, TV shows are boring and predictable, so you're a good source of fresh and interesting drama." FML
Today, I realized people think my boyfriend is gay because he loves romantic movies, gardening, shoe shopping, reading magazines, and bathing by himself in candlelight. After him asking me to cuddle and me to be the "big spoon," I'm starting to question it too. FML
Today, I was in my new boyfriend's apartment for the first time. As I was flipping through his photo albums, I came across one full of disturbingly candid pictures of me. I found some as early as my trip to the state fair, three years ago. I met my boyfriend two months ago. FML
Today, I gave the guy I've been seeing a copy of my newly published book, because I know he loves writing. He started reading and commented on how amazing it was. Then he gave it back. He didn't realize it was a gift. My awkward self didn't correct him. I'd written him a sweet letter inside. FML
Today, I saw a cute guy at the coffee shop reading a book. Wanting to be friendly, I smiled as I approached and asked what he was reading. He returned the smile and said, "Minding your damn business, by Fuck Off." FML
Today, I had dinner for the first time with my boyfriend's parents. It was awkward enough without his mom asking, "So, what do you do for fun, besides my son?" FML

I don't think I would be able to be with someone who could utter that question in a serious manner.

I feel you OP. I love reading, to me they're better than movies because you feel like your right there and you can let your imagination run wild. It's a shame some people don't see reading the way we do.

I would tell him it lasts a lot longer then a movie, and is far more interesting and detailed, and financially is a bargain as far as entertainment goes.

The disconcerting thing about this isn't even that he doesn't read himself (which is a red flag, certainly, but may be forgivable), it's that he can't even imagine why someone else would. he can't see the value in it at all. That attitude is what would have me running for the hills

Op I feel sorry for you. I can't stand a man that doesn't like to read books, If they don't read then how coil I have a valid discussion withy them on topics or politics if they didnt know what was up to date. I hope he was kidding for your sake, but if he was serious I'd drop him like the bag of dirt he is. you don't want to be in a relationship with an idiot, no matter how cute they are.

Say, "So I can read cookbooks and make you great food since I'll be spending all days in the kitchen where I belong." Then, dump him. It's bad enough that he's stupid, but being anti-intellectual should be an automatic dumping reason.

there are hundreds of thousands of books and he hasn't found one? I'm thinking he just doesn't have the capability to understand what he tries to read. and bookworm smarts are better than street smarts. also, I know wht you mean, I curse out people with Shakespeare quotes ;) so fun cuz they don't understand it.

Consider yourself lucky. After I broke up with my ex and it was just my daughter and I, the question I asked any potential "boyfriend" was: What do you like to read? (Or some variation of that.) Mostly I got "Oh, I don't read" or "I don't go to college". Not good, but one guy actually listed so many books it was insane, and by authors I hadn't heard of until then. I married that guy 3 years ago, and I'm still happy. Try that as a standard, you'll be glad you did one day. (Also, ditch the losers, you've got one life to live, don't waste one more second on them.)

I'm 100% sure I'll get to know him more before calling him my bf. my bf wouldn't turn me off in a heartbeat. Date first do there wouldn't be disappointment!

Immortal? Seriously? For someone who allegedly reads, I'm shocked and appalled at your bastardization of the English language.

Thank you!! Everyone's coming down on the boyfriend and completely ignoring the OP completely misusing the word immortal. Ugh. It sounds like she was trying to prove how smart she is and instead came off looking stupid, cause she's supposedly this "intelligent reader". Yeah, so kudos to you for actually noticing.

Are you related to OP's boyfriend, by any chance? "Immortal" is perfectly correct, not least because it's a question that idiotic ***** have asked throughout history.
docscientist 10
Well she used it correctly though awkwardly. Usually you see used when referring to the deceased of the past of famous people who have become immortalized through their words. No? Ok, how about words and ideas are still true today as in the past, thus immortal. It probably confused you two since she left the source vague rather than say, the immortal words of idiots throughout time and space...
ForS3ri0usn3ss 0
then the term would be "age old question"
dominic1221 6
Believe it or not, there are actually multiple terms for the same thing. "Age old question" and "immortal question" both work just fine, just like calling you an "idiotic prick" or "pedantic twat" would both be accurate.

Yeah, been there. I dumped a really nice guy because, when I suggested going to see an art museum, he said "Ewwww"... It's important to be with someone who's on the same wavelength in basic ways. I waited and found the right guy for me. Good luck.

He's Gaston from Beauty and the Beast! "It's not right for a woman to read. Soon, she'll start getting ideas and thinking."
