Today, while working at Home Depot, I was asked to cut some wire. When I asked her how much, she said, "From my computer to the wall". After explaining for a while that I didn't know how far that is, she left. FML

We sell electrical wire by the foot, she may have a more handy family member at home that need it, but she did come back an hour later and got 50 feet... I think her computers in the middle of her backyard. :P. sad thing is, we deal with these kinds of requests ever day... Retail sucks!!

Been there done that. I'm like if I had that type of psychic skill I would've foreseen to avoid this customer.

shoulda maxed out that cat5 and given her 300 ft so there was no complaint she didn't have enough

111, that and the food service industry. I have people refuse to take their food/drinks because they forgot they ordered it on a regular basis.

Food and Services Industry counts as retail.

OP, I'm a systems specialist and I have to deal with the same kind of people. "The computer is down." "Which one?" "The one in front of me." "......"

If she bought 50' of Cat5e that would be moronic of her, because you sell the 50' with the ends already made up and I believe it's cheaper than the 50' by the foot.

Service in general can drive a person crazy. Some of the requests I've gotten from web clients just sit in the wtf box.
eyepuppy 31
it is generally cheaper buy the foot, depending on the brand. beck, I bought 1000 ft of cat6e for under $50.

That probably wasn't ever the dumbest thing someone asked all day.

I'm sure you do, when I saw this I showed your post to my wife and asked her if she'd been to Home Depot lately.

Uhh, what computer wire is she going after at Home Depot? Unless they sell Ethernet cable by the foot, in which case I'm not sure she's bright enough to know how to attach the plugs since she can't work out the concept of measuring distances..
chatokun 10
I think I've bought ethernet by the foot there before, but that was about 10 years ago so it may have changed.

It didn't say that she went there for a computer wire. She went there for wire that's distance is from her computer to the wall.

good thing it wasn't from the window to the wall

No, what's mean is when customers just expect you to know how much they need without any measurements from them. When OP said "but ma'am I don't know how long that distance is" she should've said "oh well I think it's about (insert measurement here) long." It's not mean for a retail worker to point something out like this that is common sense. If you need a particular measurement of fabric, ribbon, wire, whatever it is, the CUSTOMER is responsible for taking those measurements and bringing them into the store. It's not the employees responsibility to magically know how much the customer needs. Pointing out that they don't know how long that distance is, is not mean, its common sense!

Did you tell her to cut vertically & not horizontally?

I work in retail also and hate customers like this. But I would have said ok so six feet. It would have been more than enough for what she needed I think.
greenpixi 10
Not so, since OP updated and said she came back and got 50 feet
