Today, to keep my dog from barking in my ear in the car, I put a buzz collar on him. It worked: he barked once, the collar vibrated, he shut up. Then, his 75 pounds trembling in terror, he pissed himself and all over the back seat. FML

ThatBackfired tells us more.

Wow. This is HILARIOUS. 1) Yes, the collar VIBRATES and nothing else. I shelled out extra for the model that had no shock option whatsoever. The collar does not shock, it does not blast his ears. The second would be useless, since he’s pretty much deaf. I would never use either of those on a dog. Yes, I tried it on myself. I have far more powerful sources of vibration. Yes, I used it previously in training. He didn’t react like this. 2) Unfortunately, his previous owner left him in a crate and forgot about him, so that isn’t an option. 3) He’s good in the car and doesn’t always bark, only when he’s (a) in the car and (b) sees rescue vehicles or other large dogs. That makes it ******* hard to predict when he’s going to bark, and makes positive reinforcement pretty much impossible, since I can’t tell WHILE DRIVING A CAR if he’s seen something and not reacted. And how exactly should I give him a treat, praise, or affection when he’s in the back, I’m in the front, and he can’t hear me? 4) Next time you’re driving, shove an earbud into one ear and tell your passenger that at some point in the drive, they should turn on the MP3 player it’s connected to, which you have preset at maximum volume. Explain to them that this is perfectly safe, and will not distract you at a crucial moment in the drive or cause you any pain whatsoever. Now imagine this happens every time you get into a car with them, and you may understand why I’m trying to train it out of him.

If you've never trained him with it, what did you expect to happen? He's never felt that - maybe it just surprised him, maybe it hurt him. To just suddenly slap it on and expect him to understand it is pretty silly. Alternately, you could always crate him in the back. YDI button should be here for this one.

YDI buttons are never there when you actually need them

For your dog's sake, please google Victoria Stilwell's dog training, she could solve this problem in a day with no cruel collars.

Vibrating collars are not cruel. Are you saying that vibrations are somehow painful?

It's still very good advice even if Charlie was wrong about the collar. Victoria is a really good trainer.

When you buy cruel shit like that for your dog you should try it on yourself first. But if you trained your dog all of your problems would be solved.

Oh my dog, vibrations, so cruel, it sure hurts me when my phone vibrates in my hand. Who could ever think of such a cruel device ???

A muzzle wuld have worked too. Always test things in a safe space first with animals!

A muzzle properly applied won't stop a dog from barking. At all.

Have you tried a citronella collar? Works better and they don't get scared from the shock.

why is this getting down voted...? what am I missing?

It's not a shock collar, just vibrates.

You deserve it. First of all, you don't use that directly in the car, without having previously trained the dog. Second, you first go for a softer version of barking collars, like the ones that spray a fragrance dogs hate, and go to the zapping ones only if the milder ones don't work. Hopefully you'll have time to think more about how your dog must have felt while cleaning your car's upholstery

OP, talk to an obedience trainer for advice on barking in the car. He's just overstimulated; try desensitizing him to the car by sitting there with him and not going anywhere a few times a day, and then going very short distances to show him that the car is not all that exciting after all. If you really must use the buzzer, follow everyone else's advice and train with it first. Tell your pup I say hi :)

I don't always vote, but when I do its because you deserve it.

People who feel the need to put shock collars on their dogs do not deserve such loving companions. You really really really deserved it.

I'm assuming you didn't read any of the other comments before posting or even read the FML that closely, but it wasn't a shock collar, it was a vibrating collar, it doesn't hurt the dog. Granted like everybody is saying OP probably should have tested it before hand and tried other training but they weren't hurting the dog nor were they using equipment meant to hurt the dog

Today, to keep my human from making truly terrible decisions, I pissed myself in the car. The wanker was trying to start training me with electric shocks therapy; it's never ended well.

And yes I red that it wasn't technically a shock collar- chill friends

Ydi for using aversive training methods. Poor pup
