Today, to keep my dog from barking in my ear in the car, I put a buzz collar on him. It worked: he barked once, the collar vibrated, he shut up. Then, his 75 pounds trembling in terror, he pissed himself and all over the back seat. FML
ThatBackfired tells us more.
Wow. This is HILARIOUS. 1) Yes, the collar VIBRATES and nothing else. I shelled out extra for the model that had no shock option whatsoever. The collar does not shock, it does not blast his ears. The second would be useless, since he’s pretty much deaf. I would never use either of those on a dog. Yes, I tried it on myself. I have far more powerful sources of vibration. Yes, I used it previously in training. He didn’t react like this. 2) Unfortunately, his previous owner left him in a crate and forgot about him, so that isn’t an option. 3) He’s good in the car and doesn’t always bark, only when he’s (a) in the car and (b) sees rescue vehicles or other large dogs. That makes it ******* hard to predict when he’s going to bark, and makes positive reinforcement pretty much impossible, since I can’t tell WHILE DRIVING A CAR if he’s seen something and not reacted. And how exactly should I give him a treat, praise, or affection when he’s in the back, I’m in the front, and he can’t hear me? 4) Next time you’re driving, shove an earbud into one ear and tell your passenger that at some point in the drive, they should turn on the MP3 player it’s connected to, which you have preset at maximum volume. Explain to them that this is perfectly safe, and will not distract you at a crucial moment in the drive or cause you any pain whatsoever. Now imagine this happens every time you get into a car with them, and you may understand why I’m trying to train it out of him.

If you've never trained him with it, what did you expect to happen? He's never felt that - maybe it just surprised him, maybe it hurt him. To just suddenly slap it on and expect him to understand it is pretty silly. Alternately, you could always crate him in the back. YDI button should be here for this one.

Why you didn't do a test run before? It's rather normal that your dog was scared.

Is this collar actually designed just to just vibrate? I've never heard of one of those, I read this post the first time assuming you were talking about a shock collar but I think I must have been wrong.

shock collar sounds bloody brutal, buzz collar is meant to sound less terrifying but do the exact same thing.

Yup, just a collar that vibrates. They're less common than shock collars, but I think are more common than "hypersonic noise emitter" collars. Pretty safe, especially compared to shock collars, since they just vibrate. Granted, you should make sure to use it properly, and only use aversion training after positive reinforcement training has failed.

Buzz collar is another name for shock collar. Regardless, it provides a very unpleasant sensation to the dog. If you don't think it is so bad, try wearing it yourself.

Yes they exist I own one it only vibrates. No it does not shock and yes I have tested it on myself. They are not the same thing as shock collars. Some shock collars do actually have a vibrate function.

I believe FML did it on purpose to reduce hate-filled comments on certain touchy subjects. Changing it from a "you deserved it" to a "glad it wasn't me" makes it sound more light-hearted of a subject. Mean comments still happen, but simply changing the vote button can and has reduced the bait to write and hate.

The problem is that the alternative buttons aren't really good alternatives. You can easily think both FYL and 'glad it wasn't me,' or both FYL and 'that could have happened to me.' And it doesn't stop any comments, because people just write YDI as a comment and then continue to say why.

I do mostly agree with you, but you have to know subtle changes to options does affect comments, almost like subliminal advertising. It's not a whole lot, or as deep as such, but stuff like that does work. FML used to be all YDI!

Why does this not have a ydi button?

I'm pretty sure there is.

Not back in my day Back in my day we had a that could have happened to me, which it can't because I don't have a dog

Why don't you try this on yourself first? The FML page has most certainly f ed up the vote buttons, there should be one that says "I want to put a shock collar on you too" instead of mild "could happen to everybody" (because not everybody is such a [insert the worst you can]. well, I'm trying to be respectful, but its so very difficlt this time).

OP used a vibrating collar, not a shock collar. It says it vibrated right in the FML and several of the comments say vibrating collar.

You so deserved it. Next time try clicker training which uses positive reinforcement.
