Today, the day before I'm supposed to leave for a long-anticipated trip to Europe, my mother admitted that she's never paid for it. She only told me she did so I would stop hinting that I wanted to go. I gave up Christmas for this trip. FML
MyUsernameIsBest tells us more.
Hello all, OP here! :] I must say that I am so surprised that my late night ranting on FML made it on the site. XD Well I thought I'd elaborate a bit. x] First of all, it was a trip with my high school AP European History class to Italy and France. It was all planned out, everything was included in what we pay online, and I already had gotten my passport. I got a part time job early last year when I found out about it to help pay for the trip, and I earned almost $850 to put towards funding it, as well as earned my own spending money. I had to give her the money because the tickets were being paid for from her account. I have no clue what happened to the money I gave my mom for the trip, but for the record she was not supposed to pay for the entire trip. A few days after I gave her the money I had earned, she texted me while I was at school telling me that she had signed me up for the trip and that it was paid for, so I stopped reminding her about it. She had already told me that if I helped earn money for the trip I could go. Secondly, the "I gave up Christmas" part referred to the fact that I agreed with my parents that I would be willing to give up getting presents on Christmas this year and the last to somewhat make up for the money they were putting towards this trip. On Christmas last year I got nothing, but I was fine with it because I was expecting to be going on this trip. They didn't tell me then that I wasn't going, they just didn't get me anything and let me keep believing. Thirdly, by "hinting", I literally just meant occasionally hinting that I wanted to go on the trip. I left the brochure laying around, forwarded emails from my teacher about fundraising options, mentioned it when my mother asked about my day at school etc. Anyone who knows me knows I'm a dang coward about inconveniencing people, never asking for things, never getting in people's way and always trying to avoid causing them trouble.. But when I realized I really wanted to go on this trip, I went about hinting about it, I wouldn't say that I was pestering her all that much. x] I did remind her about paying, but only after she told me I could go if I got a job to help pay for it. :P On the bright side, at least I have the spending money I saved up. :P

As someone who's going to travel abroad myself, I understand your anger and disappointment. But honestly, YDI. If your mother did this to get you off her back about it because you were whining about going, but unwilling to pay for any of it yourself, then it's no wonder she did. Also, there are things YOU need to do to prepare YOURSELF for the trip. How about checking the actual booking details, or find out your flight booking number and go on Aer Lingus (which is the flight most people go on for overseas travel), and find out the details from there rather relying on someone hand feeding it to you. It's called responsibility and maturity. You seem too immature for a trip to Europe.

THE MOTHER LIED THE ENTIRE TIME YOU MORON!! Almost every comment I read says you deserve it!! How about **** no! Op obviously doesn't have enough money otherwise she/he wouldn't ask their mother in the first place to go on the trip you idiot. Jesus. I'm mature and responsible too, but I'd still need help paying for an expensive trip. Use your brain.

And yes, I do think the mother should have just said no. She shouldn't have lied to Op, and should have used this as a finance lesson in life. It is a cheap way to get out of having to tell your kid no. But my statement stands. Op could have found out about the details sooner, and could have realized it was a big fat lie. I still think that Op is a little too immature for the trip because of the lack of checking for details and preparation for the trip in its entirety.

And I don't give a rat's ass what you say olpally, if you don't have money for a trip, YOU SHOULDN'T GO ON IT, NUMBNUTS. I saved up all my money, ALL ON MY OWN for this trip, rather than expecting MY MOTHER to front up for it. It's not MY MOTHER'S job to carry MY *wants* in regards to travel. She's not been out of the country in years. That money should be up to HER to use for a trip OF HER OWN. As I said, she shouldn't have lied, but the Op could have figured it out sooner. You're the moron. NOT ME.

Have you thought about how old OP is? She/he may be a teenager still. And even so, the mother could have just said outright that "No, I don't have the money to take you on a trip to Europe". And also, parents sometimes need a little prodding to take their children somewhere. Maybe that's what OP did and his/her mother decided to lie and let OP moon about a supposedly exciting trip to Europe.

Cool story 83. Not everyone can do what you can though. Big whooptie ******* doo, you can do everything on your own. Most of us can't do everything like you can. I think you don't realize that. That's the point of this FML, op needs help, mom lied about it and op obviously planned on going. Op probably was saving just for spending money while he/she was over there. The one person you trust in your life is your mother, so yeah, I'd expect better from op's mother. Op shouldn't have had to follow up if the mother lied in convincing fashion. Not all of us can afford shit like that on our own.

Sounds like you are old enough to get a job and save up yourself. Don't expect your parents to pay for something like that! That's something you do on your own time. Youth these days.

Parents aren't walking ATM's. If you want to go on an expensive trip, you should save up for it yourself! No one else is responsible for financing your expensive hobbies... At the age of 15, I worked as a paper deliverer for over half a year to buy a new camera, and also before going to university to save up for tuition fees. Now, as a student, I have a side job to save up for a long trip after getting my diploma. Sitting on my ass and waiting for someone else to finance my activities would not only be uncomfortable but also incredibly rude towards the others. Also, organizing a trip to a foreign country is always a lot of work, expecting someone to check and book good flights, finding an accommodation and perhaps already exchanging money does not sound really mature. If it was only clear to you on the day before departure that nothing was done does not really show any organization skills either...

That's not the point. OPs mom said she would pay then lied for it. The mom could've told OP to save up for it them self, but she lied. If my mom told me she would pay for something, I wouldn't work to save up for it and I wouldn't expect to pay. OP isn't complaining about her mom not paying. She's complaining cause her lied about paying and ruined OPs (nonexistent) trip

I am curious as to how many times the mom told OP no, before she told the lie in order to keep OP from asking to go to Europe. Still, mom should not have lied.

How did you keep 'hinting' that you wanted to go on a trip to Europe? Did you start wearing a French beret, singing Italian songs and baking German cake?

I think I'd pay for the trip on principle if they were willing to go that far... In all seriousness, this is pretty sad. There's no shame in admitting that you can't afford something - it's not nice to be told "no", but at least it's straightforward. It might also have given OP time to figure out other ways (s)he could have gone on the trip. But saying "yeah, sure" and then waiting until the last moment to say "Haha! Gotcha!" indicates either extreme spinelessness at best, cruelty at worst. (The idea of Europe as a "country" in itself is one I find pretty funny though. Do US schools take trips to several different countries, or is it just a case of "can't be bothered to figure out the actual country I'm visiting"? I know many people see "Europe" as pretty small in comparison to the USA, but if you meant to turn up in Spain and find yourself in Germany, you've gotten yourself fairly seriously lost...)

My school went on a trip to "Europe" ( I live in Ireland so less of a deal) but we called it a trip to Europe because we went to multiple European countries (Holand and Belgium) Maybe that's what OP's trip was like?
