Today, my mom started fundraising and selling things on eBay. At first I was happy because I thought she was finally going to help me pay my college tuition. Turns out she's planning on raising money to get our dog a new friend because she's "lonely." FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, my mother informed me that she sold my dog to pay off some bills. FML
Today, my mom started dipping into my college savings, just so she can continue throwing money away on visiting a medium who claims she can channel the spirit of our recently-deceased family dog. FML
Today, I called my mother to check up on her. Lately, she's been having some financial problems, so last week I sent her my last $100 to help her out until her next paycheck. She used the money to euthanize the family dog. FML
Boozehound
Today, after being accepted into the college of my dreams, I found out that my mom has spent all my college savings on alcohol over the years, and she says that it's my fault for not "helping her get help." FML
Today, my mom ordered my birthday presents on eBay. Too bad she used my account, so when I went to look for ideas, everything she bought me popped up. It's so much stuff I don't want, need, or will ever use, and it's on my credit card. FML
Today, I looked at the revenue from my Etsy shop. After hours and hours of hard work, I was ecstatic to find that I made about $560 so far. That is, until I remembered that it all went to my mom's bank account and I paid all the fees out of my own pocket. And yes, she won't give it back. FML
Today, I spent $500 buying my lost cat back from a jerk who thought it was his. I get home and my mom tells me that she'd sold it to the same guy for $10 because she thought the cat was ruining my love life. FML
All I want for Christmas is free healthcare
Today, I’ve been battling an aggressive form of cancer for the past 3 years. Due to the financial strain, I started a GoFundMe. I’m grateful for what I got, but a friend also started one for her dog’s surgery and got thousands of dollars. Guess the dog is more important than my kids having a mom. FML
Today, I had to give up going to a therapist because it was too expensive and my parents couldn't afford it. Meanwhile, a girl in my class is getting a therapist for her dog. FML
That's just cruel
Today, my mom told me to go meet a rescue dog. After doing all my research and emailing shelters left and right, I finally got a call. It went well! Then, my mom told me it would never happen. I'm still expecting several emails from the shelters I contacted, so I get to relive this pain. FML

My question for OP is, why do you expect your parents to pay for college?
ChenEighty 20
It's their money, not yours. Who are you to say what's right and wrong to buy with their own money?

When you have a child, you're responsibility is to feed and clothe them, keep them from harm, and give them the tools they need to make their way in the world as an adult. Money for college is a bonus, not a birthright.

Unknown... Seriously you guys? Why is everyone upset at OP's mom? Its not her responsibility to pay for her kid's college. It would be nice if she could, but OP is an adult and though it may sound harsh, she needs to grow up, get a job, work hard to get scholarships and maybe even take out a loan to pay for school. That's her responsibility. And honestly, if OP's mother has to sell things on Ebay to raise money for a dog, which are not all that expensive at a shelter, she probably couldn't afford to help OP out anyway.

At 16/17, OP may not be an adult. While I agree with you that OP shouldn't "expect" her parents to fully pay for college, I think that parents who care about their children and can afford to, should help out, even if they're not paying the full cost. OP can investigate grants, loans, scholarships like you say, but she doesn't need to do this alone.

There's parents that still help kids through college? I thought that was a myth.

I guess so. My family was always too poor to pay for children's college tuition. Good luck finding a job to pay for it yourself, OP.

I pay for all mine you can do it

Lets be realistic, selling things on ebay wouldn't even raise enough money for one semesters books.

there are a lot of ways that will help you pay for most of the cost... or you can do what a lot of people have to do... get a job.

I'm seriously shocked at all the YDI. My parents paid for my education and I didn't enter the world thinking everything was due to me or being completely helpless. When I was a student, I was relying on my parents for financial assistance yes but that didn't mean I was spoiled. They didn't have much money so I juggled with a limited budget. I did my cooking, washing, cleaning and homework because I was raised to know how to look after myself. As soon as I graduated, I actually went abroad to get a job in a country where I knew nobody, I did all the admin paperwork on my own (and in a foreign language), found a place to live, and from my first paycheck on, was fully independent and never requested a dime from my parents again, and it's been 7 years. I don’t mean to brag but my point is you can get financial support from your parents without being turned into a spoiled brat who cannot look after themselves. I am intending to pay for my kids’ education because I will have brought them to this world and it will be my responsibility to give them the better chance at a future, instead of expecting them to struggle and potentially fail because they have to work to pay tuition fees. I will support them as long as they work hard to get good grades.

Exactly! Parents paying for higher education is not spoiling, it is helping their precious child transition from a family home to the real world.

The YDI aren't all because everyone feels someone is automatically spoiled when their parents pay for or help pay for college (although there are some that may feel that way). I marked YDI because the OP expected their parents to pay for college like it was her mother's obligation to pay. Having financial help is nice and I don't begrudge anyone that. However, the help is a generous gift it's not something you are entitled to. An analogy would be your best friend buying you an expensive gift after you got a job promotion. That's an awesome thing that most people wouldn't hold against the recipient. However, if you expected an expensive gift and felt it was your friend's duty to buy you an expensive gift then you'd be viewed as a bit of a jerk. Course, that's assuming you weren't expecting it b/c you got them an expensive gift for another reason.

Please adopt from your local animal shelter. You'll save the life of the animal you choose- literally! You'll make room for one more animal to be housed, rather than put down. AND your mom should have money leftover to help pay your tuition! Win. Win. Win.

You expect your parents to pay? There's a such thing as working your ass off for all the hours we are sent so that you can get your sponging ass through college. YDI...
