Today, I was out with my youngest cousin and we had to stop for gas. Since he just got his license, I asked if he wanted to pump the gas while I went into the station to get snacks and pay. He pumped my car full of diesel. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, my wife and I were driving to the gas station, she let me out before she pulled up to the pumps because I had to buy some things from the store. I returned to see my wife proudly filling the tank. Smiling, she told me that diesel was cheaper than regular gas. We don't own a diesel car. FML
Today, I let my brother borrow my car, as he had a job interview. I told him the tank was nearly empty and gave him $20 to put some petrol in it. Ten minutes later, he calls me, saying the car won't start. He filled it up with diesel. It's a petrol car. FML
Today, I went to the gas station, paid the clerk, and drove off without pumping any gas. FML
Today, trying to do something nice for my brother, I filled up his truck's gas tank. I didn't realize until too late that it's a diesel. FML
Beep beep
Today, I took my partner’s car to fill with gas because mine was in the shop. Out of habit, I put diesel into the tank. We discovered it three hours later; the tow bill ate my weekly budget, the mechanic sighed through the repair estimate, and I spent the evening on hold with roadside help. FML
Today, I stopped at the gas station to fill up my tank and get some snacks. I paid the cashier, then got back into my car, totally forgetting to pump the $50 worth of fuel I'd just prepaid for. Too bad I didn't realize until my car came to a sputtering stop about a mile down the road. FML
Today, I was at the gas station pumping gas when the lady in front of me had a little boy who asked if he could pump the gas. She said yes and then quickly answered her phone, as it was ringing. She wasn't watching him and he pulled out the pump to early, spraying gas all over me, including my face. FML
Whoomp whoomp
Today, I stopped by the gas station. As I was filling up I noticed a cute guy at the pump next to me. When I was done, I gave him a wink before opening my car door. It was locked. I had to call my Dad to bring my spare keys. The guy was laughing the whole time as I waited for my Dad to show up. FML
Today, my car ran out of gas. I was 20 feet away from the gas pump and the only person I could ask for help was the attendant, who'd asked me out a week ago. I'd said no, and so did he. FML
Today, I was at my grandfather's house and my car was low on gas. He said I could put some of his gas in my car. He accidentally gave me the wrong tank to pump it out of, and I put fuel in my car that he uses for his small plane. It never ran better until the engine exploded. FML

What a pain in the gas.

That's just an overall bad idea. Maybe you should've pumped it yourself and let him go inside to pay and get the snacks...or at least watched and made sure he could do it properly.

You should forgive him, but still, FYL. He didn't know.

you'd expect someone old enough to drive would know the difference between diesel and gas. or would at least be smart enough to ask which fuel the car takes.
thatguynamedsky 32
until this post i would have done the same thing...
dragonvale19 12
Whats the difference??? Seriously.....
cristy91 33
Diesel and gas undergo different refinery processes and diesel engine uses diesel in a different way than a gas engine uses gas so they are def not interchangeable. Hopefully OP can siphon it all out before anything permanent happened :(

Where I live, diesel pumps are made special so they can't even fit in the car.

Same where I am too. I assumed they were all like that.

Forgive him for essentially ruining the car? Not only should he NOT be forgiven, he should be forced to pay for the damage.

Diesel gets good mileage though!

Putting the wrong fuel into a petrol/diesel engine can ruin the engine and require a swap...this is an FML indeed xD
lunar999 23
It would only requires a swap if he actually drove the car for a little while. If OP noticed before they had driven again it's just a matter of draining the fuel tank.

Putting diesel into a gas engine wouldn't even start the car, and would probably just require an engine flush, if anything there would be very minimal damage!! It's when you put gas into a diesel car that it can cause issues due to uncontrolled detonation of the fuel. So OP, just be happy you don't have a diesel car and this FML was going in the opposite direction! : P

14, you'd be surprised. I went to a gas station a few months ago and filled up. About a mile later, my car started losing power and went into limp mode. Turns out, the station I filled at had put diesel in its premium fuel tank, which then put diesel into my gas tank. The car got me home, but wouldn't start after that because the spark plugs gave up on life. Got everything fixed on the gas station's dime, which cost about $800. Luckily for them, I didn't need a new engine.
Kaalschneid 21
diesel in a gas tank can be replaced and new spark plugs will fix most things. other way around, and you're F'ed. badly
bc3091 10
True. One of my family's trucks was filled with gas a few years ago. It didn't last long. Ended selling it as spare parts because it was no longer worth fixing.

It's much better to put diesel in a petrol engine than the other way around. I accidentally confused the colours of the spigots once (thank you very much, British Petroleum) and put petrol in my ex-fiancée's diesel engine. The damage came to more then €8000. To their immense credit, Volkswagen paid for the entire repair. Though given what I know about my ex now, I would be much happier had they not. :-P

Please tell me you didn't try to start your car! Please!

If there's diesel in the tank and you dont start it, can you save the car?
orangeshels 19
Yea maybe. You'd have to drain the fuel tank. If you start it it's generally unsalvageable.
MrZsDad 19
It would be fine. only have to change fuel filters and drain tank...now if he put gasoline in a diesel, it could blow the engine real fast.

What type of idiot can't pump their own gas? License or no license.
Khaleesi_26 30
Maybe he has a truck or learned to drive one and is just used to pumping diesel, so didn't think twice about it.
Mauskau 36
This is why some cars come with stickers inside the fuel cap to say diesel or petrol. However you'd think OP would've mentioned what to get and how much to get.
MlleMC_fml 19
Larla, it's pretty easy for someone who has never done it not to know how. It doesn't require a long explanation, but a basic one is useful (especially if it's not the car that the new driver usually drives).
meggieeeee92 27
You should have double checked that he knew which gas to put in since he's still a new driver! But still, I feel like this is common sense and I'm not sure how people do this.
ZuRG_fml 7
How is that possible? I thought diesel used a different nozzle/similar to make the distinction idiot-proof?
sabrinaMA 7
Lmao forgive him? Yes forgive him while you shell out money to fix your car. No, I hope you make his mother pay for it. If he's old enough to get a license then he's old enough to have common sense. If you don't do anything about it then don't complain

I use the same gas station every time I get a refill, but one time I hadn't remembered to fill up before a long day. I stopped into a different gas station whose sides for the diesel fuel were flipped, and I absentmindedly filled my whole car up with it, thinking it was the regular gas I use. Maybe the same happened to him.
Mauskau 36
In the UK, the diesel pumps are black and the petroleum pumps are green. They also have labels on to say what they are, the gauge says what you're pumping along with the price. Diesel is more expensive, surely you'd be smart enough to use your eyes before spending so much money in a short space of time. I couldn't remember which side the pump was on if I went to the same one every time.
MrConcise 35
Force of habit is really strong, and the total amount was never a factor to me. It was just "this one is cheapest" and it was always on the left. So when I went to the new one, I clicked the button to the left (in the US they all use the same pump) and didn't give it a second thought.

Next time: leave the snacks. Better for your health and the health of your car..
