Today, I told my professor that I'll be missing class next week due to upcoming surgery. I asked if I could take the exam that I'd otherwise miss another day. He said no, and that I'd just have to take a failing grade, then wished me luck with the surgery. FML

Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, I got an email from a professor saying he was going to fail me for missing the allotted absences, which is school policy. I pointed out I was in the hospital for two weeks with a life threatening illness and that he even came to visit me. He told me, "Rules are rules." FML
Today, I have six exams next week, and as of this morning, I also have appendicitis. FML
Today, I left my grandmother's burial to take a midterm. Earlier I e-mailed the professor to ask permission to take it later, and she flat out said "no." I left my grieving family, and traveled hours back to school. I went to class, only to discover that the prof decided to move the exam date. FML
Today, I walked into an exam after having stayed up 20 straight hours studying. The professor looked at me and muttered, "Don't bother, I'm failing you either way." FML
Today, I received an email from my professor informing me that if I missed another class, I'd be dropped from the course. I have field experience to complete tomorrow as part of my major. I emailed her two weeks ago to let her know, and we're excused by the dean. She doesn't care. FML
Today, I told one of my teachers I have to attend a family member's funeral on a day she's passing a test. She straight up asked if I could reschedule it, and if not if I could just give it a miss. FML
Today, I tried to explain to my professor why I’d missed two classes. Even with a doctor’s note explaining my very serious health issues, she rolled her eyes and huffed, "Maybe if you’re ‘oh so sick,’ you should just drop out!” Gee, sorry for trying to improve my life through adversity. FML
Today, I was supposed to take a test, but the professor didn't have it ready because he went to a concert last night. I sold my own tickets to that very concert in order to study for the test. FML
Today, I had an emergency appendectomy, so I texted my boss to let him know about the situation. He replied that it'd be good for my continued employment prospects if I came into work tomorrow. FML
Today, I went in to take my College Placement tests. I'd spent all week ignoring actual homework to study for these tests. When I got there, the responsible told me that the tests were last week. FML

Had this happen to me. I needed a tonsillectomy and had to cancel it because my prof wouldn't let me take an important test early.. I took the test and lost my health insurance before I could get the surgery done.

I had this happen to me a few years ago with a final exam. My instructor wouldn't let me take my final early and I had to have the surgery. I decided to write the head of the department explaining my situation and included the medical excuse from my doctor. The head of the department ended up allowing me to take the final early so I wouldn't have to miss it. Seriously, go over your professor's head and explain your situation. Something can be done about it.

Ok, so I'm a senior in high school. I tore my ACL in my Sophomore year so I couldn't take my last semester of P.E. until my senior year. Low and behold I ended up fracturing my knee running cross country for my school and couldn't walk for the rest of the semester. I went to talk to my counselor and she literally said, "Well, you'll fail the class and we don't let seniors take gym second semester so you won't be able to graduate". This was the only credit I still needed and I had a 4.0. We ended up going to the superintendent so that I could get switched into weightlifting.

Most of the time you can't pick and chose when to have surgery. Doctors and surgeons are very busy people who schedule a surgical process wherever they can fit it, so it's most likely out of OP's hands
