Today, I told my neighbor that I was going to Réunion Island on vacation in a few months. She said that she'd always wanted to go there. As a light-hearted joke, I said she should come with me. She's now booked a plane ticket. FML

My parents used to do this a lot. Our own neighbor was likely autistic (she was a lovely woman, but took things literally as well) and my parents made the same stupid joke. I had to tell her, "They are kidding, it's a joke" when she was like "Oh I will book a ticket." She got upset and my parents felt horrible. They made the joke once more and someone came back and asked what hotel room we were staying in.

A week ahead of time say something came up and don't go and then reschedule it and say you're going to Disney...that way no one gets hurt...
