Today, I started a new job. The supervisor handed me a badge with the name 'Rachel' on it, which is not my name. When I told her this, she responded with, "I know, but it will be easier for the customers to pronounce than your actual name." FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Greg
Today, it was my first day. HR handed me a badge with my photo and… someone else’s name printed in big letters. I spent the whole morning being introduced as “Greg” to people who said, “Nice to meet you Greg.” By lunch I’d corrected maybe 3 people and reinforced everyone else’s assumption that my real name was Greg. FML
Cut short
Today, my first day at the job, I went up to my coworker and began to ask her name. She cut me off and snapped, “I have a name.” FML
Today, the 75 year old blinding owner of the bar I work at called me over and told me to fire "Rachel, the stupid c**t after the next wrong thing she does". My name is Rachel. FML
Who am I?
Today, after being with the company for over 3 years, I realised nobody really knows my name. This was after my boss was walking around a new staff member and couldn't introduce me. Neither could my colleague, who's been sitting next to me for the last 6 months. FML
Today, my boss called me Ashley. My name doesn't even start with an A. I even wear a name tag. You would think after nearly four years, your boss would remember your name. Every time he speaks to me, it's a different name. FML
Good start
Today, our new co-worker started her job as member of our customer service team. It took some time to find someone good, so we were very happy to have her. After a few hours of explanation, it was time for her to log into her account with her work e-mail. Then she asked how our company name was written. FML
Today, I went to my first day of work in over 2 years. As I approached the boss, he asked me what my name was. Turned out they hired the wrong person. FML
Let him cook
Today, I realized that I've been using the wrong name for a coworker for the past 6 months. I just found out their real name when I saw their name tag. FML
Nice meeting you
Today, my boss finally pronounced my name correctly. My name was then followed by the words, "You're fired." FML
That's not my name
Today, I finally got my nametag. I had been using other people's names like Maria and Caie for a week, so I was happy to be called my own name. I put it on and got to work. Ten minutes later, I was called into the office. I got laid off. I got to wear my nametag for 10 minutes. FML

Just view it as your job alias, OP. Your work-persona, your mask you put on when you start working. Writers use pseudonyms - other people can, too. Would you rather the customers berate you using your real name? If they can't know your true name, they can't touch you. Can't strike at you. Can't use magic to do you harm!

I can see why this irks you, OP, but your boss has a point. However, if you have a particularly unusually spelt name or a difficult to pronounce name, then you should be allowed to pick your own nickname, such as an abbreviation or inoffensive nickname given to you by peers. However, you could view Rachel as your new nickname...

My best friend's name is Raquel and people always call her Rachel... Never made sense to me. @ OP, that really sucks.

I imagine a lot of Chinese people have to do this because the Eurocentrics are too lazy to pronounce their real names. I'm curious though that I've never seen Japanese or Indians (Hindu/Pakistani) do this. (I mean in real life, not for a job)

Maybe it's a regional thing? There are big Afghani and Kurdish populations in Nashville, and I ran across many who took on "American" names for work.

Ugh, misread the lady part. Disregard. :)

FFFUUU-- Why are my comments going though the first time NOW?! Last*, NOT lady. ATTENTION: I do not have any firsthand knowledge of RPS's lady part. I did not have sex with that woma--MAN. I mean MAN. (Sorry RPS, your secret might be out.)

My friend's mother is from Taiwan, and I don't know what her real name is, but she just says it's Nancy...

I had to Americanize my name when I moved from the Middle East to America. Everybody still says the americanized name wrong.
