Today, I spent 3 hours making a birthday card for my boyfriend, delicately cutting each letter out of printed coloured paper. He used it as a coffee coaster. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, my boyfriend came over to celebrate our anniversary. He had a card written in crayon with my name spelled wrong, and a basket I had seen his mother throw in the trash filled with flower petals ripped from my mom's garden. Our anniversary was 3 days ago. FML
Today, my boyfriend gave me a card for my birthday and told me to open it 10 minutes after he'd gone; I waited for 5. In the card was written, "It's not working out, but here's $20." FML
Today, my boyfriend came to visit me for my birthday. Over dinner he handed me a blank card that had the words "I love you" hastily written on it. When the waiter came to take our order he informed him that we'd be paying separately. Happy Birthday. FML
Today, I wrapped my boyfriend's Christmas presents for him, because he was too lazy to do it himself. This included my own present. FML
Thanks, I guess…
Today, it was my birthday and everyone in the office chipped in to buy me a card, and nothing but a card. It had a pre-written message on it and a space to write "Love, *insert name*" where everyone signed their names. The "Love" was crossed out and replaced with "From". FML
Today, I had an art class with my girlfriend. The teacher assigned "anti-cards", or cards for unusual or bad occasions. My girlfriend decided to make a "break-up" card, and I helped her write the poem inside it. After class, she gave it to me. FML
Today, I wrote a song for my boyfriend on paper. The first thing he did was correct my grammar. FML
Today, I spent hours hand-painting an awesome design on a gift for a friend. My husband was supposed to assemble it when I finished, but when I stepped back to admire my work, he informed me that the whole thing was sideways. He watched me paint it. FML
Today, it's my birthday. My boyfriend didn't get me a present. He did, however, get me a card from our cat. He signed it "Have a purrrrfect birthday." Then he left to go to work. I was alone all day long. FML
It's the thought that counts…
Today, I wrote my boyfriend a poem, and left it on the bed with a rose for him to see after work. When I came home later, I noticed the flower in the trash, and the poem had been used as gum wrapper. FML

When someone does that kind of shit with stuff I make, I stop caring about getting them anything special. Next time just grab a card and sign it, since he doesn't seem to care. By the way, don't print out colored paper just to cut out. Go out and buy construction paper, it's cheaper.

What a jerk. Even if he's not into the sentimentality of cards or whatever, he should at least show some appreciation for you and your effort.

@80: THANK YOU. It's so nice to see somebody here who doesn't have a completely heteronormative mindset.

Next time you should save your time and effort and get him one of the cheap-o cards from WalMart. They're like, 38 cents or something.

#70 is right. OP: Not all guys are self-centered asshats. Some will care about more than being fed and ****** and actually appreciate the effort that you put into making them smile and laugh. Now, I'm not saying your boyfriend is one of these, as I am all for finding practical uses of sentimental items, it's great that he's going to see it often (while it lasts). But using it as a coaster is going to cause damage, which shows that he couldn't have cared much. And #80, what difference does it make if it is a guy or a girl? It's someone who put a lot of effort into making their boyfriend happy and it was grossly unappreciated. What's your point?

That sucks, I completely understand. I make cards for my big brother EVERY birthday/christmas. Along with other gifts, I just think homade things are alot more special rather something bought from a store. And every birthday/christmas I find them in this bin that he keeps all of his old music & things. I try to stop caring, though it is hard.

Hey, I'm sorry that happened. I guess in the future, if you two stay together, maybe make him cookies instead? That way, they can be enjoyed as they are intended and will never end up neglected or abused somehow. My last ex-boyfriend, I once made him a three-dimensional polyhedron. I spent many hours carefully measuring each piece to be as precise as possible, using precision math tools, and then I carefully cut each edge with a scalpel so it would go together neatly and pinched the edges together with tweezers. At the end, I put it on a chain so he could wear it around his neck. Well, he took hold of the chain and swung it recklessly, crashing it into tables and dropping it into the floor. He swung it so hard he broke the metal chain, and I take it as credit to my handiwork that the (paper) polyhedron didn't break. Two days later, he'd destroyed it spilling ramen on it. I was fool enough to make him another one. He put it in his pocket and sat on it a few minutes later. Paper polyhedra are strong, but not strong enough to support a person's weight. I'd like to say, give your boyfriend the benefit of the doubt and assume he simply didn't know how much you put into your card. It was a bit insensitive of him to use it as a coaster in front of you, but I like to think he honestly didn't know it would hurt you. Probably best to talk to him about it, so in the future he will know. I hope this doesn't hurt your relationship! Peace.

For his next birthday you can get him a sock to keep him company, as you'll be off finding a guy who's less of a tool.
