Today, I offered to let my niece and brother stay at my apartment, as my brother was going through a rough divorce and had lost his job. After coming home from work, I found my niece had snapped all of my pencils and had ruined over ten years worth of artwork. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Mature
Today, I asked my niece to house-sit because she acts very mature and sensible while her brother is an idle slob. Turns out the idle slob nephew is the mature one while the sensible niece actually likes to throw house parties. I found a used condom stuck to my ceiling. FML
Today, I came home and found my desk devoid of all paper. Turned out my mom dropped by and wanted to surprise me by cleaning up my work area. She threw away over 7 months worth of irreplaceable original sketches, notes and storylines, thinking they were worthless. My job is a full-time artist. FML
Today, I had to babysit my 7-year-old niece while my brother bought Christmas presents. After he left, she walked up to me and said in a very dark voice, "I'm gonna make you hate children!" Now my apartment looks like a bomb site. FML
Poor good boy
Today, after an emergency, my sister’s kids had to spend the night at my house. While I was asleep, they absolutely trashed my place top to bottom. In the morning my sister came in, said, “Wow, what a mess! Bye!” without offering to help clean up or make her kids do it. They drew on my dog. FML
Can't take my eyes off you
Today, I babysat my niece and thought a quick shower would be fine. I left her watching cartoons with a blanket and returned to find she’d used washable paints on the carpet and her hands, leaving tiny colorful footprints to the couch. Her proud smile made me forgive the mess, but I spent the evening scrubbing. FML
Thicker than water
Today, after hitting hard times and needing a place to stay, I'd asked my sister for help to which she sent me a paragraph-long response about how it would break their lease if they had people live there, leading me to sleep on a friend's couch, I found out our tweaker mom started staying at my sisters and didn't leave for 6 months. FML
Today, my mother-in-law visited the house while my husband and I were at work. When we returned, we discovered she'd shredded and thrown away all the scribbled on papers sprawled on our messy desks. We're graphics designers. Those were rough sketches for about 14 different clients. FML
No introductions needed
Today, my younger half-sister discovered my existence. She then went to our grandparents' house, smashed my picture off their wall, and ransacked their house looking for other pictures of me to destroy. She's in her mid-twenties, behaving like a child. FML
Today, I came home to found all of my belongings out on the street. My roommate, who is also my brother, apparantly neglected to pay his part of the rent, and we got evicted. FML
Roommates from hell
Today, I got home to the smell of permanent marker and the discovery that my roommate's little sister had drawn flower petals around every polka dot she could reach on my walls. I just put up the wallpaper last weekend. FML

"Hey, bro? When you get back from wherever you were instead of keeping an eye on your kid, you may wonder why her hind end is glowing so brightly, people who see it think Gondor is calling for aid. Well...let me tell you..."

I wouldn't blame OP if he gave those ungrateful losers the boot. If this is how they act in the early days of this huge favor, how bad will it get once they start taking if for granted!?

Yeah because child abuse will so improve that situation

Did you try to snap a pencil in anger but then got even angrier because they were all snapped?

It depends on whether or not his brother let the girl do that. She is just a kid and hopefully they try to make it up to him somehow.

“Misery loves company” And if the company finds out you’re not miserable, they’ll fix that!

Starting to wonder if his lack of parenting skills had anything to do with the divorce.

It’s also possible the niece has some anger or emotional issues resulting from her parents’ divorce. There’s not enough details to really judge the brother’s parenting skills—we don’t know how old she is, if her father was at home with her when this happened, or how he reacted. On the face of it, it kind of seems like he ****** up, but if the niece is living with her unemployed, and technically homeless father, you kind of have to wonder what the situation with mom is like. Either way, sounds like OP got a pretty shit deal.

That child isn't handling the divorce well.
