Today, I got back to work from a 3 week vacation. My boss had asked me to get him something so when I returned I presented him with a shotglass with the British flag on it. I later found out that he is a recovering alcoholic. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Great idea, actually
Today, the boss returned from vacation. While he was gone we thought it would be a great idea to fill the water cooler with margaritas. Even after rinsing it, we still have lime flavored water. Needless to say we got a company memo about appropriate office behavior. FML
Today, I had to have a word with my boss about how him coming into work drunk is probably not a very good idea. FML
Today, after drinking myself to an oblivion, I awoke with a massive hangover. I didn’t want to go to work, but every excuse I came up with in my head screamed of alcoholics. When I arrived, my boss asked me why I was there. It was my day off. FML
So close…
Today, while working at the bar, I was having a flawless night. Every pour was perfect, every shot expertly measured. I saw my manager for the first time that night, turned to greet him, and knocked over a tray of 30 or so glasses. Only two remained unbroken. FML
On the wagon
Today, it's been almost a week since I returned from my vacation to Ireland. Before I rarely drank. Now I'm pretty sure I'm an alcoholic. You might think I'm joking, but I've woken up hungover every day since I landed there. I basically paid to kill my liver and become AA's next poster child. FML
Dysfunctionally functional
Today, a coworker confided in me that he’s taking a leave of absence to get treatment for alcoholism. I feel for him, but I’m also incredibly jealous. He’s better at our job while drunk than I am while sober. FML
Today, I got promoted to a management position. After work, I went for a drink with my co-manager and a few of our colleagues, where they discussed their plans to take Ecstasy before/during our work Christmas party. Wonderful. FML
Today, I didn't get promoted, but the guy who showed up to work drunk a few weeks ago did. FML
Today, as a recovering alcoholic, I called my brother to share the news that I've been sober for a month. He invited me to a bar to celebrate. FML
A night to remember
Today, I was at my boss's house for a company BBQ. Earlier I had taken muscle relaxants to calm my lower back pain. After a few drinks it was clear the alcohol and medication did not mix. I woke up few hours later to find out I had stripped naked and jumped into the 4-foot cake before passing out. FML

There's probably no way you could've known that, so I think he'll appreciate the gesture :)

I think it's obnoxious that your boss ASKED you to get him something. Like, you already work for him, why should you have to buy him presents? He should be grateful you got him anything at all.

Sure, OP works for him already, but it's not like it's out of the goodness of his heart -- he gets paid for it! Anyway, obviously if the OP actually went out and bought something for the guy he likes his boss a little. Not all bosses are terrible people. And anyway, maybe the boss just mentioned it in passing, as a joke, not really expecting to hold the OP to it.

I'd say your boss deserves it for asking you to get him a gift on your vacation. Seriously. Who asks for gifts?

tell him to use it as a toothpick holder

Or an espresso shotglass. Change for the vending machine. Paperclips.

**** off, that's not a choice, people whose parents are more likely to be alcoholics because it can run in the family, and although it is possible to develop the disease (yes, DISEASE), generally it's something you're born with. AND he said his boss is a RECOVERING alcoholic. Recovering is used for any alcoholic that has stopped drinking, no matter how long they've been sober, because you are never cured. My dad hasn't had a drink in 13 years and is a recovering alcoholic. Being a recovering alcoholic and actually succeeding in staying sober is an insanely amazing thing - only about 10 percent of those who go into treatment or AA succeed in staying sober. OP's boss is probably a better person than you could ever be.

This one is not that bad. Some people collect shot glasses whether they drink or not. In Nauvoo, IL (Mormonville), they have shot glasses with the temple on them.

Tell him it's a fancy british tea candle holder, it could work.

My family seems to have a propensity for alcoholism. To call it a disease is to glorify their stupid asses by taking away the accountability. It's not a disease. Neither is gluttony for the food ******. I'm so sick of this shit!
