Today, I found out why my parents have been trying to convince me not to go to college this year. I also found out where the $20,000 they just spent on landscaping came from. My college fund. Which is now $0. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Poof, gone!
Today, I found out that my parents used all of the college money I have been saving up for 8 years to buy a beach house. The reason they waited until now to tell me? A tree fell on it, and they need more money for repairs. FML
Today, I found out that my parents are 28,000 dollars in debt and that my bank account has $27.17 in it. They took my money to help pay their debt. FML
Thievery
Today, I checked my bank account that I've been saving money in since I was a kid for college. I have $100 left out of the $10,000 I had last month. Apparently my parents thought buying a pool and an HDTV for themselves was more important than my college education. FML
Today, I discovered my parents have spent my college fund because "2012 will happen" before I graduate. FML
Is that even legal?
Today, I discovered that my mom got my college fund in the divorce. I will never see that money again and now I can’t afford a four year school. FML
Today, I found out that I owe my college a little over $10,000. Why? Because, due to a slight misspelling of my name, the scholarship that I have been going insane trying to meet the requirements for is not actually giving me any funding. FML
Today, after months of living on five dollars a day for food in college, I found out my parents bought me an expensive meal plan and forgot to mention it. FML
Coincidence?
Today, I learned that the new granite countertop in my parents' house cost $12,000. Coincidentally, this is also the amount of money I would have needed to go to the college of my dreams instead of the cheaper school I currently attend. FML
Today, I found out my mom took around $2,500 from my savings account to pay off my sister's college tuition. She recently flunked out of her studies and won't be returning to college anyway. FML
Today, I discovered that when my parents offered to help me pay for college, what they really meant is they would get the forms for me to apply for student loans. FML

I realize that it was shitty of them to spend the money they had saved (on landscaping, of all things) and then try to convince you not to go to college, but you need to recognize that giving you money for college is a favor, not an obligation. Some of us have way more that $20,000 in loans for school because we felt school was a priority and our parents couldn't/wouldn't help us. I also can't help but dwell on the part where they convinced you not to go "this year"- sounds to me like they'd give you money in the future, after they've saved up a bit. If that's the case, you'll still get more help than a lot of kids do. Overall, this sounds very whiney and ungrateful. Grow up.

I know what his parents are doing is a favor, but the real issue is that he thought he was going to have help paying for college, and then he didn't. He probably has nothing against paying for it himself, except that he didn't realize he needed $20,000, in addition to what he may have earned himself. He might have gotten another job. But now, he's had no time to prepare. Stop bitching about your own issues and don't assume that he's just upset because he'll have to earn money himself.

It would be "whiny and ungrateful" if they had spent the 20K on something serious, such as medical bills or staving off foreclosure. They spent his college money on mulch and flowers. Yes, parents are not obligated to fund their childrens' college (mine couldn't!) but they are obligated to stick by their promises and not encourage their children to miss out on college just so they can keep up with the Jones.

The parents were jerks to promise him the money, then change their minds and try to convince him to wait to go to school. And that's a lot of money to spend on grass. However, they earned the money and it's ultimately theirs to spend as they wish. I used my brain a tiny bit to figure that out.

I like how people like you only seem to mention responsibility when it refers to other people. Your parents have absolutely no responsibility, legally or morally, to pay for college or university.

has no one ever heard of a thing called financial aid? yeah you might have to pay back more after you graduate but at least you got a degree to get you a good job.

I really feel sorry for american and Canadian students. You have to pay so much to go to college so you either need to get scholarships or start saving as soon as you are out of the womb. I cant believe your parents did this, its not just not going to college its the fact that it could have a very big knock on effect for the rest of your life. Shock your parents by studying in scotland instead. I think your tuition is paid for you( well it is in some cases). That would give them a kick up the arse haha

do some damages around the house that are equivalent to 20k

My dad did that to me... but he bought a boat instead. Thank ******* god my mom had a separate account for my college fund that he couldn't access. I get that there are people here saying "blah blah blah you shouldn't rely on your parents to pay for school" but I'm guessing 90% of these people either a) live outside of the US where college is SO much less expensive or b) are idiots who went to community college. I've had a job since my 2nd year, and even though my parents paid for the first two years of school, I'm still going to be 30k in the hole once I graduate.
