Today, I asked a friend to hang out. I'm so used to people saying no, that when she said yes I burst into tears and had a panic attack. FML
Stripes_And_Dots tells us more.
Firstly, I'm not insane or anything. I have chronic depression and very negative self-esteem. I was talking to her over facebook, so she didn't see me have a flip out. I actually have quite a few friends, but since finishing high school last year everyone is so busy working or at university that we rarely have any time to hang out. I had three friends in high school who I was especially close to and two of them pretty much shut me off. For about a year now every time I've asked them to hang out they've said no, one of the blatantly lies about being busy or tired because she just can't be bothered. The other one, the one I asked, has moved out of home and has been struggling to pay rent and bills, so she's been working lots. I'm so used to hearing them say no, that when she said yes it shocked me and I didn't know how to react - hence triggering the panic attack. Once I'd calmed down I was excited and we're going to have lunch on Monday :)

Sorry to hear that OP. I seriously gotta wonder though about somehow the people on here. Kids having panic attacks over hanging out or asking someone out? This can't be serious, have things gotten that bad?

Having friends does build self esteem...keep it up..,

If you are planning on acting that way to begin when then don't ask people to hang out with you... Don't always expect people to say no. Your friend will probably not want to hang out with you now, thinking you are going to act that way every time you ask. YDI

How do they deserve it? Panic attacks aren't exactly easy to control. Quit being such an ass.

Harsh much? Calling everyone an ass is definitely no way to make new friends either!

Holy shit OP I feel like I was reading something I'd written. I know exactly how you feel, it sucks right now I know but just keep your head up and try meeting new people/making new friends. If you find it difficult approaching people - e.g. not knowing how to start a conversation with a stranger, for example, try taking up a new hobby/join some kind of club and find people who share your interests. At least it'll be something fun to look forward to. Good luck OP, hope you manage to salvage your old friendships or make new/better ones, or both :)

Good for you OP. I hope you have a fun time and get to catch up with her.

Hope you have fun! I know exactly where you are coming from (mental illness ftw), after so many "no's" it's always surprising and awesome when someone finally says yes :).

I recently moved from the east coast of the USA, where I've lived my entire life, to the west coast. I've suffered from severe depression with suicidal tendencies & anxiety attacks brought on by stress & social situations most of my life, from being horribly bullied throughout my childhood, up until graduating from high school. I came here with my husband after he got a job offer he couldn't turn down. I have no friends & my only family here is my husband. I've slipped back into a very deep depression & recently brought myself out of those suicidal thoughts by focusing on music, getting back in school, & my husband. I know exactly how you feel. I have met 2 girls since I moved here that I thought could become friends & the only time I hear from either, they want something or are turning me down when I ask about hangin out. I really do know how it feels to feel cut off & ignored. I hope this stops for you soon. If they are true friends, they would make time for you. I hope you can find a way to make more friends that are willing to make that time for you. I have no job, no vehicle, & no way to make new friends so my depression & social anxiety have become much worse over the last year. I hope this isn't the case for you. I hope things get better for you soon. Keep smiling.

Hang in there OP i suffer very similar attacks. That's anxiety for ya. Comes out of nowhere sometimes. Glad u get to hang w Ur friend, make sure u tell him/her how much it meant to u to catch up or whatever. They may be more likely to do it again soon knowing they're appreciated.

sounds like me, you only need good friends, not people who don't want you around. You seem cool and kind of like me op, chin up :)
