Today, getting home from a long day at work, I checked the mail and saw three envelopes from the IRS. Apparently I now owe over $4,000. I only have $2 in my bank account. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
IRS FML
Today, I got a letter from the IRS informing me that I owed a debt of $80 dollars from 4 years ago, and that it has now grown to over $800 dollars, and it's due this month. FML
Today, I sat down to do my taxes. As I was going over my forms, I found my employer only took $1.72 out the entire year for my Federal Income Taxes. I now owe the IRS over $500 that I don't have. FML
Today, I found out that I owe the IRS money due to my previous job not taking enough taxes out. I am broke, unemployed, and was counting on a big refund so I could pay for my divorce. FML
Not my mistake
Today, I found out that my employers apparently haven't been taking enough money out of my paychecks, and now I owe thousands of dollars in taxes. I already live paycheck to paycheck despite doing nothing but work. FML
'Cause I'm a Criminal
Today, I woke up to find both of my bank accounts frozen. My bank informed me that the IRS had ordered a freeze on my assets because of back taxes owed, and would not unfreeze them until the money is paid. The amount? $2.47. FML
Today, I found out that I owe the government money and that the amount will increase if I miss the deadline two months ago. FML
Today, I found out I owe the IRS over $2,000 because of a mistake they made. Their "apology" basically amounted to "Oops, our bad. Now pay up or you're gonna be Bubba's new bitch." FML
Meritocracy, amirite?
Today, I worked for 4 hours and made $28.00. I have $1500 of bills coming due soon. FML
Funny how it's never the other way around
Today, I got the letter from the IRS that would FINALLY enable me to get the tax return I was supposed to get two weeks ago because they needed to confirm my identity. I logged on, entered the information, and was told that I would get my return… after "up to 9 weeks for processing." I need to pay bills NOW. FML
Libertarian nightmare
Today, when I checked on my last payroll, I realized that I pay more in taxes than I do in house bills. FML

If they want you to pay in gift cards it's a scam. For your sake I really hope that it is a scam. Owing that kind of money isn't fun.

They’ll take that. Then, prison.

You don't go to prison for 4k in back taxes. Hell, I really doubt that you go to prison for back taxes unless you've been doing something else wrong. Nick Cage owed 6.5 million in back taxes at one point and they never put him in jail. OP, if you can find someone to work with you, speak to a tax accountant or lawyer. They'll be able to give you specifics on what you can do. You also need to get in contact with the IRS to show them that you're cooperative. They'll go easier on you if you're trying to make things right.

if you owe only 4K, a lawyer is not worth it, unless you think it is mistaken. in any case, I would just call the irs first. if you do owe, you can set up a payment plan.

I'm pretty sure RichardPencil was joking, but you're right. I know several people who owned business that went bankrupt in 2008 due to the recession. They've owed $100,00+ dollars to the IRS with no way to pay all at once. As long as you keep in constant contact with the IRS and do what they say to make things right you should be fine.

Yeah, sounds about right. The IRS likes to kick you while you're down.

Could be a scam. I’d call the police or take the letters to the police station to see if they’re legitimate.

Google the IRS phone number and call them. Don’t call whatever phone number is on the bills. Confirm it’s a legitimate tax bill before paying.

My suggestion, having been in the same situation, call them, talk to them, be polite, they'll work with you for a payment plan. I only had to pay 50 bucks a month until it was paid off.

but yes, call the IRS, not necessarily the number on the bill, just to be sure
