Maths

Today, despite doing extra credit, staying after class to have one-on-one tutoring with the TA, doing online tutoring and watching YouTube videos, I still absolutely cannot do math! I’ve been reduced to bribing my nephew to do my work for me. I’m in college. He’s in 7th grade. FML

It sounds to me that you've accumulated massive gaps over the years, and they're now preventing you from understanding the concepts you're supposed to be learning at your current level. Unless you're, e.g., a senior math major at Princeton, there's nothin you shouldn't be able to understand with the appropriate amount of time and effort. Also, what kind of 3rd rate university do you attend that teaches math that a 7-grader can handle???

Is it possible that you might have dyscalculia? While there could be a plethora of other issues that might be at play, there's no way for me to know just from this FML submission, it's something you could look into if that could be a possibility.

I can't either. anything number related, math, times, time frames, phone #, table #s at my restaurant. can't do any of it. I'm 42

So, you've turned to cheating?

Is it possible that you might have dyscalculia? While there could be a plethora of other issues that might be at play, there's no way for me to know just from this FML submission, it's something you could look into if that could be a possibility.

So who are you going to cheat off of when you get a job with your math degree?

Most degrees require a college level proficiency in Math. If she's struggling this badly but her nephew can do it, then she's probably taking classes that are remedial level to catch up.

Go to your disability center and tell them this. They can probably figure out where the underlying issue is--and if it's this bad, yes, you have some kind of learning issue. Don't feel bad--I'm dyscalculic, and it turns out I can actually do math decently once i know what I'm doing.

Why bother taking math then? Grow up!!

I'm no mathematician but that doesn't add up... how can a seventh grader do college level math? Unless he's a genius. Do we have a new Sheldon Cooper in the world?
