Chill out, dad
Today, my father is incapable of doing anything without cursing and swearing so loudly that the neighbours hear him. If I ask him what’s wrong or to stop swearing at inanimate objects, he starts yelling at me for "jumping all over him." I can’t win. FML

Next time he swears at inanimate objects, join him! You'll either bond over shared expletives, or he'll think you went nuts and tip toe around you

He is not swearing at the neighbors yet so that's good but early dementia does come to mind. Get friendly with them in case you need their support.

Everyone has a bad day occasionally. Assuming this is not the norm for Dad, just stay out of his way until it’s over. Update: Based on the wording I assumed this was not Dad’s current “normal” behavior. Assuming this is not normal behavior for Dad - I stand by my original suggestion. If this behavior is or has become Dad’s usual behavior there are three possible explanations: (1) Depression - I had a psychologist once tell me that in many men the symptoms are irritability. (2) Dementia - It can result in an inability to deal with normal events and irritations resulting in this kind of behavior. (3) Trauma of some kind - A major life event (unexpected loss of job, foreclosure or eviction, serious romantic betrayal, or anything else that causes something like PTSD) could be the reason and Dad might not be be sharing what that event was.

my dad was like this the whole time I was growing up, until he went on antidepressants and now he's a completely different person! I remember him telling me he went to the Dr about it finally and when asked if he has anger issues he said "I'm not an angry person but stuff just passes me off" the dr was like "yeah thats depression" they've really helped him and now he isn't as bothered by small things. also my father inlaw apparently used to get pissed off super easily until he had his blood pressure checked and went on medication for that, now he's pretty chill!
