Bothered
Today, my little sister brought home her new boyfriend. He has an impressive job and is very charming and attractive. Apparently I'm the only one slightly bothered by the fact that he's 35 and she's 19. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I noticed my 35 year-old boyfriend is starting to take an interest in my 19 year-old sister. They increasingly spend time together and he talks about her all the time like a little boy in love. When I discussed boundaries, he had a fit about how he can have friends and abruptly ended our 4 year relationship. FML
Today, my sister, who is now 19, gathered the guts to formally present her boyfriend to us. She was so concerned that my parents wouldn't let her have a boyfriend, she kept it a secret for 5 years. We were happy to hear it, until she presented him to us. He's a 35-year-old taxi driver. FML
Today, I met my older sister's cute male roommate. Everything was going smoothly until he asked if I was her mother. I’m only 20. FML
Today, I found out that both my younger sisters are bringing their boyfriends home for Christmas. The youngest is 25, and he's actually her fiancé. The other is 30, and she and her boyfriend have been living together for over a year. I'll be the 36-year-old spinster in the twin bed upstairs. FML
Today, my younger sister stopped talking to me. I got engaged to my boyfriend of 4 years and apparently, she's been in love with him since she met him. Through me. She's 12. FML
Today, after confessing to my 16 year-old sister that I was only into guys younger than me, she said that was OK because she was attracted to guys in their late 40's and that an age gap was not that much of a big deal. FML
Today, I introduced my boyfriend to my sister, but they already knew each other from my sister's work. She's an exotic dancer. FML
Today, my sister brought me coffee to my office. It was really nice so I made a status about it on Facebook. My boyfriend texted me soon after, freaking out because I never put anything on Facebook about him and how great he is. I'm basically dating a 14-year-old girl. FML
Today, I appreciated how much my older sister is engaged and fully appreciative of how wonderful my girlfriend is… until my girlfriend told me that she has a huge crush on my sister. FML
Today, I asked my sister what she thought of my boyfriend. She said, "He's nice. Deserves better than you, really." FML

They're both legal. Judge him by his character and how he actually treats her, not his age.

So they are at different stages in life, so what? Who dictates that you need to be at the same stage to be in a relationship? Maybe other people simply have different ideas of what a relationship must be like. On another note...I actually think you're kinda discriminating not against the guy, but against the girl here. You're assuming that it's grooming instead of thinking that she's fully capable of making her own decisions. Btw. the current french president and his wife have a 25-year-age difference. And, surprise : She is the older one.

As long as sister is 18 it’s really her choice, not yours or anyone else’s.

Would your position be different if the “legal” age were 15?

Who raised y’all justifying this age gap??? Its sick!!! Both people are in different stages in life. It’s grooming and it’s wrong. Any grown ass man who can’t find someone their own age is a huge red flag. Sickos smh 🤮

And yet there are those whose fave category on “the hub” is barely legal. Why not rant about that? I met my wife at 27, she was 17. Later (5 years later) after meeting again, we ended up married at 21/31. Been married 9 years now. Legal is legal. That’s what matters, not asshole that are prudes with opinions. Either get off your high horse or change the laws. Long time ago, people got married at 14, it’s only been raised as women don’t die in childbirth as much, and you don’t have to pop out 12 kids to only have one heir left to carry the name after the others died of disease. Yes, legal age exists and it’s a good thing, but damn, judgy people like you suck to be around.

Barely legal is just as disgusting. If you’re a grown ass man you shouldn’t be going after girls 10+ years your junior. Its borderline pedophilia. Why can’t you find someone your own age? If you don’t see that as a dealbreaker then idk what is. Just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s right. I pray to god that you never have a daughter sicko

both legal and consenting adults...none of your business

lol @ copalolita's little conniption. You do understand that grooming has a definition, and it is not "dating someone significantly younger than oneself" nor can it be assumed from that criteria, assuming both are of legal age, right? Who raised you? Glad hysterical self righteous twats don't make the rules. 😂

Slavery was legal but does it make it right? So let’s say the “legal” age to consent is 15, would your position be different?
maverick83 15
Oh hell, why do so many of my discussions involve giving a whole lesson on a subject? Yes, I would probably say that 15 is too young for the age of consent. Do you understand what the age of consent represents? It is a crude but necessary construct. It's the age at which you are considered an adult, and you trade the protection from bad decisions and potentially being taken advantage of for the freedom to make your own decisions and accept the consequences. Not just relationships, but a whole assortment of decisions and activities. Smoking, drinking, gambling, and anything involving entering into a contract. I say it's crude because people are complicated. They are extremely diverse, and mature at different rates. Some people are ready for responsibilities at age 13 that others aren't prepared for by age 40. But we don't really have the ability or the resources to form a comprehensive assessment of people's capacity for these things on an individual basis, so we need a defined age where we determine that the majority of individuals are sufficiently prepared for those freedoms and responsibilities, and we arrived at 18. Maybe it should be higher, maybe it should be lower, but that's where we set it. Relationships and compatibility are even more complicated, as they involve multiple people. And the same principle applies. It is entirely possible that a 15 year old could be compatible with a 40 year old, for example, to approximate the hypothetical you're implying. Uncommon, but not impossible. But they are a minor, and deemed incapable of making that decision, and of accepting the responsibility and consequences which may accompany it. The restriction exists not because it is certain they will be abused or taken advantage of, but because they might be, and they aren't deemed old enough to accept the risk. Once they reach the age of consent, they are. And as such, the validity of ANY relationship between consenting adults, is left entirely to the judgement of those consenting adults, and only interfered with if any of those adults stops consenting or is being abused. The age of consent is not about determining the validity of a relationship, but about protecting someone who is deemed incapable of making certain decisions. Slavery robbed people of their right to live freely and make their own decisions. That sounds more like your position on this issue than mine. Per your other comment, you can be disgusted and call me a sicko all you want, and I will, in turn, call you a control freak who thinks your personal tastes and preferences should be imposed on everyone else. If someone is actually being harmed, I am all for getting involved and stopping it. But it isn't valid to assume they are because you're personally disgusted by the thought of their relationship. And I'm glad the laws aren't based on what any random person might find disgusting, but actually have the comparably sound and rational basis I've described here.
maverick83 15
...that said, you do want to be aware of the signs of abuse. That's just good to know on general. An age gap can be exploited by an abuser, it just doesn't necessarily mean he is one because that gap exists. The same can be true for a gap in wealth, or various positions of authority. If he's controlling and/or tries to isolate her from friends and family, that's an issue. What's more, if you're opposed to their relationship from the outset, based on his age, you may make it easier for him to isolate her from you, if he is abusive, because you seem hostile to the idea of their relationship rather than anything substantial, and therefore adversarial. Approach this with an open mind, and voice concerns about his behavior, if there are any, not his age. That's reasonable, and will go over better with your sister.
