It doesn't matter whether or not she did anything wrong. The boss went about firing her in the wrong way. If you are going to fire someone you need to have the guts to tell them to their face that they are fired, or you aren't fit to make that call.

These FMLs never tell the whole story. We don't even know if he/she did anything wrong to get laid off. For all we know, he/she might've deserved it for doing an idiotic thing.
That does not matter. What matters is the way in which it was handled.

heyy that happened to me once, it totally sucks. hope you find a better boss next time :)
He/she may have deserved to be fired, but as the boss you are an authority figure and should act as such, and not telling someone that they're fired to "avoid conflict" sounds like something a teenager would do not someone in charge. Plus that might lead to conflict in the end anyways. So both of them are in the wrong, in my opinion.
