The problem with that is if OP didn't told them that from the beginning they are changing their story. And that is not a very good idea.

Actually, depending on where you are, and what the truck is for, you can get that charge dropped. For instance, most places allow the transport of hunting or fishing knives on the way to or from said activity. Work knives are also generally covered. Depending on *where* in the truck it was, it could also be acceptably located. I've researched the knife laws in my own state pretty vigorously, because I get off work at 2am.
