Even if you DID know it was her birthday, she can hardly expect you to remember it that quickly. I remember when my fiance's birthday is, but sometimes I "forget" just because I don't realize what the date is. My own brother called me a day late for my birthday because he didn't realize it was already the 21st of April, rather than the 20th. I don't see what the big deal is about birthdays anyway, nobody ever feels different upon turning a year older that I've ever known of.
