Even if the lotion had nothing to do with his dead wife, giving someone a gift that's already been used is unbelievably tacky. I wish we would get more of the story behind this one.

How long has his wife been dead? I think the best thing for you to do is maybe ask why he chose that gift. It might be something simple like he was cleaning out her stuff, and didn't have the heart to throw it away, so he gave it to you without thinking.
