Today, my boyfriend and I lost our virginity to each other. The pain was excruciatingly unbearable, so I went to the doctor and found out I had a severe yeast infection. No one had ever told me not to use soap to clean down there. I'm 22. FML

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that either and I'm also 22. I also recently found out girls get 'smegma'. My mum not only never told me or any of my female siblings (one is nearly 40 damnit and the other is 31 now) but doesn't believe in girls getting it.

It doesn’t always itch. Try actually educating yourself before you have the nerve to question someone else’s intelligence.

I don't recall being educated on genital hygene during sex ed and I definitely didn't get any from my parents, but still had the foresight to read up on it myself.. so i kind of feel this was easily avoidable. Which reminds me, sexplanations on YouTube literally published a vid on ****** and vulva care a few days ago and one of yeast infections (how good is that timing), might be worth a look - along with others given your seemingly low amount of knowledge in that area. Might want to educate your man on smegma too if he's not circumcised.

You didn’t notice you were living with weird discharge and terrible itching and burning?

Your ****** is capable of keeping itself "clean" because it has a lower pH than most bacteria can survive. It also has its own naturally occurring flora of bacteria that take up space and keep others out. Using soap can actually kill off that natural flora and allow other bacteria to grow and take over, thus an infection. When it comes to cleaning a bit of warm water is usually all that's needed. The ****** is more than capable of handling the rest.

That doesn't sound like a yeast infection, it sounds like a latex allergy. I had that happen once when a partner accidentally grabbed a latex condom. Burning pain during sex, followed by inflammation and severe itching. It did take on the symptoms and appearance of a severe yeast infection by the day after.

I didn't even know that. how are we supposed to clean ourselves then?

They have soap specifically for the area; soap that doesn’t mess with your pH balance. But that’s only if you need it. Washing it with water, on average, is typically all that’s needed. The outside is completely safe to use average soap with though.

Don't use any soap. No sort of cleansers or douches should be used internally, discharge is how the ****** cleans itself. As for the vulva and labia a rag with warm water works. "Ph-balanced" products like Summers Eve should only be used on the outer areas.

there are some special soap just for that plae. but external use only. also good for cleaning fresh tattoos.

I understand. It sucks being stupid and not pretty. 😔. Lets just be happy

What is happening?!?? Of course you use soap to wash the outside of your ******. Maybe don't use heavy duty crazy soap but please use soap when you clean yourself. My mother always told us not to take baths because the bath salt/bubble batch whatever can mess with your ph but SOAP?!? Please use soap. I'm starting to realize why women's restrooms smell like they do...
