If you really loved your cats and cared about their wellbeing they would be inside 100% of the time. Allowing a cat to be an outdoor cat halves their life expectancy.

I agree, they should be kept inside at all times if that's possible... there are so many dangers to a cat outside (weather, idiot humans, birds of prey, other predators, sickness, ticks/fleas, etc) Did you have a litter box in there for them?? Maybe next time try shutting them in the bathroom, if they aren't using the litter box. Easier cleanup at least!
