Honestly, I don't see a problem here.
What it may mean is that he may have liked her but she wasn't into it and had probably not been giving 100% to the relationship and so he saw it withering and after 4 months of trying everything to make it work, he finally concluded it was impossible to fix. He spent 4 months pouring his energy in since she didn't have the courage to just end it and likely subconsciously manipulated him into ending it for her. (Making him suffer through those 4 months)
What did you want her to do, cry her eyes out and beg you to stay while you say "It's not you, it's me" and walk away?
Win-win no fighting and no psyco girlfriend am I right?

Eh, easy break up then. I guess it kind of sucks to find out she hasn't wanted you for that long, but at least your split won't be a drawn-out process.
