Public freakout

Today, I had to bail my husband out from jail for almost killing someone. What happened? He and my sister-in-law were in an grocery store when she spotted his old high school nemesis, who back then was the biggest bully in school. She thought that it would be "exciting" to see what would happen if their paths crossed again. FML

You didn't have to bail him out, but your sister-in-law should have known better. What is she, 12?

You did not "Have To" bail him out.

Just going to say it, your husband has ptsd. Trust me, I know the feeling. Sadly, I experienced something just like this yesterday when trying to get a protection order. I’m lucky I was able to control myself, but it was one of the hardest things i’ve had to stop myself from doing in my life as I contemplated whether I wanted to give up my recent progress (full hire plus benefits for first time at a job) for the satisfaction of ending someone i absolutely hated in a courtroom to protect my wife. I’m moving next month and putting as much distance between us and them as much as I can instead.
