In the US, at least in my state, it's illegal to give a bad reference and is perusable in court. Legally, a former employer can only disclose your dates of hire and separation. We don't know your whole story, but I hope things get better.
When you go on an interview have a list of references with you and their phone numbers. Don’t even mention anyone you don’t want them to contact…. And yes, what boss did was probably illegal, and definitely unethical. But proving that in court is another thing…
