I will never understand the folk who just sit down wherever without remotely looking at where they're sitting. It sucks for sure, and you don't deserve it as no one really deserves that, but you don't really have anyone to blame but yourself.

I can see how this would happen very easily. UK trains are always incredibly cramped, busy, and rushed, and the individual seating space per chair is so small that I'm not surprised you had little chance to see before you sat down. It's not as if you had much option to decide to stand either, unless you wanted to stand in the cramped space of the door lock like sardines with the twenty other people undoubtedly also stuck there.
