Today, I once again had to explain to yet another student up for expulsion that hate speech, slurs, threats, and sexual harassment are NOT “protected by their first amendment rights.” How these idiots even got into college is beyond me. FML

Doesn't help that we have a president who encourages that kind of behavior. I'd say it's only going to get worse.

Freedom of speech has been forever a balance. There are some things that are clearly hate speech or dangerous like shouting 'fire" in a crowded room when there is no fire. And then on the opposite side there are a few people who consider anything they hear and don't agree with as "hate speech". I trust that as a person in your position that you are fully aware of both sides. And I sympathize with the difficulty of the task you have.

Anyone is free to say what they want but will have to deal with the consequences if you are using slurs or bigoted language.
