Your boyfriend is a complete scumbag for saying that to you. Seriously, you are so much better off without him. If you're feeling down, yeah, I agree with the others who say that fishing for compliments isn't the way to go about it, and neither is relying on someone else for your self esteem, but seriously, this guy is a douche for saying that to you. He obviously doesn't respect you AT ALL and you should chuck him. Men need to learn that speaking to women like they're dirt = getting dumped. I know that you'll probably stay with him but seriously, think about how little value you're placing on yourself by doing that.
